I'm going Tac/Cruiser myself, and from all the advice I've been getting it works to a point.

You lose the survivability being an Engineer gives you, but gain some damage. The big problem is that to be taken seriously in PvP Cruisers fill one role: support. The extra damage you'll be able to do will help a lot, but people will be looking to you more for support.

In PvE, as far as I know, you can do whatever combination you want and still come out on top.

PvE: It works just fine.

PvP: You'll be the squishiest of the cruisers, and since you'll likely pick the "DPS Cruiser" (ie Excelsior), which is reasonably squishy too, this won't be helped. The extra damage is of some merit, but without focusing on cross-healing you'll more often than not be a liability to the team.

Advice: Try the retro-fit enterprise, it's sturdier and if spec'd with dual beam banks can deliver a decent punch in escort mode (ie with the saucer off) (Should also work well with regular cannons and turrets with rapid fire) - it'll just suck to not have use of full impulse or if you die, having the damn saucer back on.

I leveled up my tac in a cruiser. It's simply easier. And it's certainly *more* survivable than the escort in PvP - and by an IMMENSE amount.

Yes and Worf was a Yellow Shirt and didnt look like an engineer.
The meaning of the Clorors in game and in the Series are not the same.

To the Tac/Cruiser combination: I thing that combination sucks. Well with the Excelsior you might have some success.... because i thing that ship was build those hundrets of players who used that combination, sucked and startet to whine.

I didnt PVP for a while, but when I did (as a BOP pilot before season 1 I did level entirely though PVP) a tac cruiser was always the first targert; he doesnt deliver the damage to kill you and cant survive. And I was never beaten by a Tac Cruiser in 1 vs 1, not even in 1 vs 2 on several occasions. But they may have changed that since it seems that half of the players are Tac cruisers and those are usually those who shout "PVP is unbalanced".
And in STO those who are the loudest get what they want....

To pve.... of course it works in PVE. With a cruiser in PVE I engage Autofire, set the ship on course and go doing other stuff until the mission is finished by itself. And no, I'm not joking.

short answer: no

Is this a wise thing to do game-wise? Or should I be
respec'ing to Escort class?

you can do whatever you want in pvp, including flying the starter ship to max level and its still easy

My rationale was: Picard was a Red Shirt, but he flew
the Enterprise & that doesn't look like an Escort to me.

picard was a diplomat and an archeologist, he wore red because that was the uniform color of command and he was captain, riker was red as first officer, ensigns wore whatever field they were hoping to be promoted in

Although I don't know if this is a bad thing for me game
wise or not. I'm not really doing a TNG role play for my
game (just a Liberated Borg captain & mish-mash of
other aliens).

Thanks,
JV

Technically, Picard was a science officer in a cruiser. Mackenzie Calhoun (from New Frontier) is a tactical officer in a cruiser though (Ambassador class Excalibur and Galaxy II (Galaxy Retrofit?) class Excalibur-A). The times Riker was in charge, he'd be a tactical officer in a cruiser.. or tactical officer in a science vessel, if you follow Star Trek: Titan.

It's just that, prior to 2409 (where Star Trek Online takes place), if you were in charge of a starship, it didn't matter what division and colours you wore prior. You wore red. Or, in Kirk's era, gold.

LOL. Well it sounds like I better avoid PvP then. Perhaps
with a different char later on I'll look into doing it right. I'm
surprised to read of someone able to go autopilot & win
battles. I usually have a tough time, either the battle takes
forever to finish, or I end up dying several times. I play
on the Advanced difficulty setting & resort to Normal if
after 2 or 3 times I can't seem to succeed.

That's some interesting Trivia about the shirt colors. I
guess Picard just liked red? LOL.

Thanks for the replies.

I bought a 2nd ship (thank you exchange!) and got a proper escort class, with full mk 4 weapons and consoles, and was able to use my tac bo in the LT slot and What a difference it makes. I can clear a 3 spawn of +1 cruisers or battleships in under 3 minutes. I'm fast, I hit hard and that heavy payload torpedo is just amazing.

I figure, if I want to tank, i can always create an engineering officer, (which i did with my klingon).
Really at such a low level as you are I would recommend escorts over cruisers. Cruisers become much more robust when they have more weapons slots. Once you get to RA you get 8 weapon slots and really that is when they start to show their usefulness. Around Capt they are pretty good but before that I would go escort.

I have no issue with a tac/cruiser.....in fact ive become more relevant in doing so. Granted the dmg isnt as great, however.......I can defeat most 1 on 1 in PvP and have no issue in PVE with up to 5 opponents shellin me all at once.

It took me a while to get to that point though..you have to work your build from skills to BO's.

I may die...just not as easy as some would lead you to believe.....and I usually take a few of them with me.

We'll see how the cards fall when Cryptic redoes the ship builds in a revamp attempt.

If its anything like the previously new released ships (including the celsior) it should be more viable for any type of officer.
