@Merisity
Thank you for that post, you have pretty much assuaged all my fears at picking Cruiser for my new Tactical character (I haven't played since closed beta). I'm not 100 percent sure I will choose it over Escort right now, but I feel reassured that the option is there without completely gimping myself.

I gotta Vice Admiral TAC in the refit excesior and as much fun as the escorts are.. its just to usefull a ship.. I can pump out the damage, and I can take a hit or two or three and keep on going.. Being able to Transwarp pretty much where ever I want every 30 min. is a nice bonus too when couple with the diplomatic travel options. When it comes to cruising around the Galaxy nothing tops the refit Excelsior. It's a very good solid ship. It may not have cannons, and most other cruisers typically out gun me the way I have her set up.

Pretty simple set up. 2 retro forward phaser, 2 retro aft phasers. a couple green quantum mounts fore and aft (which I may just respec and put Photons in for the higher rate of fire) and fore and aft breen transphasic mine projectors...(I just love those...they are such fun! and they do surprisingly well and helping to knock shield down in a hurry and getting a head start on hull damage.)

I like the refit because she's got an awesome base turn mode for a ship her size. She has the fire power to go toe to toe with a cap ship, yet can take some hits when dealing with smaller Burst damage types..
I have my TAC captain abilities, and limited BO abilities from the TAC officers, but plenty of self heal from my ENG and SCI Bo's, and disruption powers from the ENG and SCI BO's also... (If your not dumping warp plasma in thier face.. in spite of it being nerfed some builds back.. yer missing a trick!.. Warp plasma if its not eating thier ship and shields is distracting the target from what it could be doing to you!)

A Captain in a class type ship for thier type is all well and good, but this is TREK!.. Cruisers/Battlecruisers are the prestige ships of the Trek universe and always have been. There is no reason a SCI or TAC captain cannot fly one and do quite well!

If thaey cannot then its a fault of the basic design of the game which fortunatly, is not a problem.

Enjoy your cruiser, I sure do!

I'm Cap 4 tac/cruiser. I tend to stay PvE so the build work great for me.

My first Char is a Tac/Cruiser...

2nd an Eng/Escort

for my third I will make and Eng/Cruiser just to see the difference.

As of now w/ the Aegis EQ & Borg Console and Mk XI wpns...I PWN EVERYONE!!!! PvP & PvE!!!

I run w/ 125wpns & 80+ Shlds on BOTH my Escort & Cruiser!

In my cruiser I outfitted my BOs w/ Defense in the Eng so I can live and Offense in my Sci & Tact. slots...w/ the benefits of my Tact Cptn (VA1) I do some serious Pwnage!

In my Escort I do some nice Dmg as well and have enough on Defense to live as well. I havent done PvP w/ my escort yet but I am sure I can PWN there too.

A Tact Capt IMHO has a fatal flaw in that you cant use all of the training you receive from skills like HY3 or other 3rd tier stuff (Unless you go Excelsior) BUT in an Assault Cruiser which is what I am flying you can still do your share of PWNAGE!!

I am HAPPY w/ my Tact. Cptn/Cruiser..."Don't go PWNING w/o one!"

Directed Energy Modulation. Version 3 at close range is quite potent. It increase the amount of damage each of your shots does through shields. It's more effective in PvP though, since shields go down pretty easy in PvE.

My rationale was: Picard was a Red Shirt, but he flew
the Enterprise & that doesn't look like an Escort to me.

Although I don't know if this is a bad thing for me game
wise or not. I'm not really doing a TNG role play for my
game (just a Liberated Borg captain & mish-mash of
other aliens).

Thanks,

A tactical officer can fly a cruiser just fine as the cruiser is the most forgiven ship type in the game.

Also, Picard wore read because he was a command officer not a tactical officer; in the shows/series the color that the crew(s) wore was more to dictate their rank than their role (otherwise Kirk would have been an engineer when we know he wasn't and Janeway would have been a tactical when we know she was a "scientist first").

But you cant get DEM in the 4 spot of Eng. bcuz you are a Tact. Cptn NOT Eng...so that is Moot!!!

And I do use DEM in the 3 Hole and yes it does VERY well!

Actually Sivar....Red in TNG was Tact. & Cmnd...in TOS Gold was Cmnd & Tact...Scottie wore Red and he was Eng. but also we know that Red was Cannon fodder! Blue forever was Sciences.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here but Tactical Captains can indeed get DEM III.

I have both DEMII and DEMIII on one of my Bridge Officers.

Most of the abilities can be trained now by other captain types with the exception of rare BO abilities like Beam Overload III, Aux to SIF III, etc.
