I understand that right now the Space, and Ground Combat are not separate. But until then it seems like we should be able to "Spec" out a "Ground Away Team" to make up for the fact that I may be a Captain that spent the majority of his Skill Points on Space.

Lets use http://www.spidermitch.com/STO/Spide...DShipChart.jpg as the basis for what ship we need and where they need to go

I also consider anything that you can only get at VA to be teir 6, I am not sure if thats offical game policy but for the sake of discussion, and ease, I am going to use it.

As we can see we have the following holes:
  1. an escort retrofit for the tier3/5 gap
  2. Sci and cruiser Teir 6 ships
  3. a Tactical special ship to fit in with the Dreadnought (Crusier) and the Vulcan (Science)
So all in all for the immidiate future we have 4 ships that I believe Cryptic should focus on first, as personally I want them to balance it out, before making anything new.

Now, lets add to what we already know (and make some best guesses)

The Andorion ship could fit into the Dreadnoiught/Vulcan hole and be the 'special' tactical ship

Now the Akira does not fit the tier pattern for it to go in the tier 3/5 slot, as for one, its already in tier 3, and two its far too modern to fit in with the other 2 ships in this section. The way I see it you need a cannon ship with a little history within the franchise to go in there. In my mind that leves us two options

The Constellation class http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Constellation_class

or

the Ambassador Class http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Ambassador_class

The ambassador class might not fit in their directly, however the Nebula (and arguably the Luna) class vessels got shoehorned into the Sci tier so its possible that tthe Ambassador class could get put in there, as we know they are working on putting it in the game.

The Enterprise F Type is your tier 6 Cruiser.

That leaves a Tier 6 Sci to fit in, I dont know what they could put there, but a retrofit of the Nova wouldnt be the worst thing in the world.

Now, onto the Akira.

In the future, when and if they raise the rank limit to 7 and 8 then yes an Akira could fit in, however thats a loooooooooooong way off and personally I wouldnt want to see it till that time, so personally I dont want to see it (yet)

we were talking about the lack of a advanced heavy escort for tier 3 and 5 earlier, this was my solution

in the past i suggested the ambassador fill that role too, but it is kind of a hard sell. constellation wouldn’t even be fit for tier 3.

Here are my thoughts on an Akira Refit.

It's was more a cruiser/gun boat then a pure escort. Therefore it should be more engineering heavy as far as powers are concerned. either the 1 ensign 1 lt. slots for engineering or better yet, 1 Lt. Cmdr slot for engineering abilities.

Second, it should probably feature a special weapon slot that only a torpedo can fit in to, and fires in a 360* arc. I would not suggest this as a console simply because it only makes sense on the Akira. this would come at a cost to a "loss" of a traditional weapon slot, and also a loss to a device slot.

the console on the ship should be something that would improve any ship that slots it, so I'm thinking maybe a High Yield IV or Torpedo Volley IV ability. As this one would be slotable on any ship it would make sense that the Akira would be the only one with the special torpedo arc.

It would have a decent sized crew, and be a sort of in-between of cruiser and escort, like it should be.

here's hoping that at least the Akira Refit will be engineer centered as far as concept.

I just want to share my thoughts I've had recently for a refit idea. Now mind you it could be OP but I wish to share none the less.

Maintain the 3/2 weapons slots but make them Beam only. Give it 8 dedicated torpedo slots: 2 fore, 2 aft, 2 starboard and 2 port. No global cool down on the torpedoes themselves but it can only equip photons and quantums. Bridge Officer layout could be thus: Cmdr. Tac, Lt. Tac, Lt. Cmdr. Eng, Lt. Eng, Ens. Sci. 3 Eng consoles, 2 Sci consoles, 3 Tac consoles. Maintain it's base turn rate but only up it's hull and shields to be equivalent to that of the Tier 4 Defiant. It does sound OP but it also sounds interesting.

I saw that as well. My only concern... how do we know that "Variant" isn't their word for "Skin"?
