After an extended break, Fed Engineer in Retro Defiant. (sorry this is a lot from memory--finals week upcoming haven't logged in yet).

Have any of the powers/weapons changed significantly which will change my build or tactics?

I have 3 heavy dual cannons fore, 3 turrets aft (all disruptor). Mk XI or XII commons...

consoles:
tactical - disruptor coils x4
science - bio monitors x2
engineering - +weapon power ones? x2

powers i used to use:

tactical
cannon rapid fire III + attack pattern Beta II
cannon rapid fire II + attack pattern Beta I

engineer
RSP I, EP to weapons I

science
hazard emitters I or II (can't recall)
transfer shield strength I or II (can't recall)

Overcapping weapon power no longer works. At least on my testing a few months back. So i would ditch the the weapon power consoles. Though, I have read a few threads recently that say that it does still work. I might have to test again, but this is what I did before on my fleet escort to test (also equipped with DHC x3):

Went into a low level DSE. Power level at 125/100.
Fire a single DHC ---> Power remains at 125
Fire 2 DHC ---> power drops momentarily to 113 before coming back up.

Added a +7 weapon power console. Power still at 125/100 (theoretical 132/100 if overcapping works)
Fire a single DHC ---> power remains 125
Fire 2 DHC ---> power drops momentarily to 113 before coming back up.

Also, RSP got nerfed to 6 seconds for version 1. You are better off with emergency power to shields.

word. thanks for the info. I'll check weapon power levels and hopefully (if i remember the check these forums) report back.

I'll check EPtS, if it lasts longer than 6 seconds, I'll switch fashow. but with the regen x3 it used to be like a temp invulnerability... 6 seconds is all i would really need to cover my butt for a bit

EPtS lasts 30 seconds.

This is still a very viable build, however I'd check up on just a couple things.

First, engineering consoles: Since you're running so many cannons, an EPS console is pretty essential. But moreso than that is the new-ish field generator console, which gives you +35% shield capacity. I'd also lose EPtW and pick up either 2 copies of EPtS, 1 copy of EPtS and RSP, or RSP and EPtE...all depending on your playing style. If you like to get in, blast away, and get out, you can easily use the last combo because you're an engineer.

Science: Whether you have the borg set equipped or not, getting the borg console is possibly the best console decision you can make. Stick it in a science slot, and then pick up either an induction stabilizer or a halon console, both will increase your healing. I'd recommend ditching the transfer shield strength for a science team though, so you can clear subnukes.


Otherwise, using rapid fire cannons with attack pattern beta should get you some nice results.

coo, thanks for the amplifying info, very helpful. I'll peep out the borg stuff (new since I left), after school finals here I plan on hitting it hot and heavy.

i neglected to mention that I do use tac team II, and unless the teams don't conflict with one another (they used to), i think that's the reason i ditched the sci team, I'll peep it out though.

overall i'm happy that my build isn't obsolete though, i haven't gotten to test much in space (briefly entered a enemy sig contact to see wtf my button setup was--LOL), but i plan to much more and see what the overcapping/optimum levels n stuff are these days...

Shield resistances have changed, So heads up on those. they cap at 75% now, and recently I am suspecting some silent nerfing on more then that. So heads up, if you get into ahuge fight, shields will buckle, no more perfect shields.

interesting. where's the link to the info on the shield stuff? my search-fu is generally weak.

as far as the survivability, I'll double check here very soon, but back in the day (yes i just started with that crap), I didn't have much issue in PvE staying alive like John Trivolta, i carry around shield batteries, I am an engineer, and i kill faster than they can kill me, so i focus primarily on offense.

that said, my first option for my engineer Boff abilities will be to stick with the weapon power/RSP (unless i find that the overcapping and energy management for the 7 guns of doom isn't what it used to be). then i'll use the fallback of the shield power as my plan B, but i kinda strayed from the cruiser (and subsequently the Dreadnought X) to be more of a killa... tanks are so "20th century" in this game (no i don't wanna turn this into a "do we need tanks" thread)...

check the past Engineering reports. was oh... about 6 to 8 months ago the shield revamps happened. To be honest they did need it. Having perfect resistance shields really took away from the game.
