I don't think Weapons Malfunction works on melee weapons, though, which is, for me anyway, what does the most damage. It will protect you from those sheild draining dual disruptor pistols, though.
No but it will stop bolt spray. That can one shot you on advance and elite, with a critical strike. Suppressing fire and mine barrier are so helpful with those guys. I think gravimetric shift and sonic pulse for science officers. You can kite them easily with some practice. To reduce their melee damage, a lot.
