I will be the first to admit that I suck in PvP. However, I consulted my fleet for a spec that would make the Dreadnought better for it. Many of them stated: Just use the excelsior. Really?
There has to be more to it than just scrap a $20 ship.

So it leaves me with this question: What is needed to make the Dreadnought viable for PVP? I happen to like the ship and it is interesting to me that ships that were in the game since launch ( star cruiser and sovereign) are better than the "Newer ships."

Unfortunately with it's superior turn rate and BO layout, the Excelsior is a decently tough ship.

I've been contemplating trying out the dreadnaught with the beam boat setup.

Its only downside really is one less console for the beam boat layout, but you get the cloak and bonus spinal lance... Don't know how effective it could be without major testing.

You're going to need every heal you can get your hands on.

First off, if you pvp vs klingons you will get targeted first, or as soon as you drop your cloak. Because they will see you as the easiest target. Mainly because many pvpers consider the X to be one of the weakest ships out there.

Eng teams, aux to sif 3, AP Delta 1, tac team. Hazard and transfer shield. Then prey.

But, if you dont care about how many times you blow up. And you want to try and push some damage.

You could try a few dual beam banks up front, a tractor beam to get the lance off. Aux to Damp to turn better. Whatever tac skills you like, I would suggest tac team. Than any heals you can get. I'd stay way from cannons, at least the big ones.

You should know you're facing an up hill battle with this ship. As far as pvping goes anyway.

My questions for you are. What type of captain are you? What ship are you flying right now? What boff abilities are you using right now?

I would agree that the Sovy is a much better ship than the X, I think most people would agree with that.

People don't target me because it takes about 3 or more to actually get my attention.... Seriously the Galaxy X misinformation is amazing.

To make this work (as the OP asked):

Be a Tac Officer. Preferably Alien with Accuracy and elusive traits at a min.

Officer setup, your bread and butter:

Tac Slots: Tactical Team 1
Target Subsystem engines (Or your favorite flavor) Beam overload 2

Engineering:
Engineering Team 1, RSP 1, Emergency to shield 3,
Emergency power to Engines, Extend shields (or other favorite), Emergency to shield 3, AUX to SIF or Eject Warp Plasma 3

Sci:
Polarize Hull 1, Science Team, Tractor beam or Transfer shield strength, Hazzard Emitters 2

lance tactics.... you'll basically start your approach from cloak and conduct an escort like alpha strike. Your goal is to blow a whole in the shield facing to throw down a lance blast. Tractor beam, can help this to great effect. Prepare by using all your tac damage buffs, decloak (+15% damage for 5 seconds) unload as much as you can to drop a shield facing, once dropped use lance.

Presuming you did this all in around 10 seconds (since you did catch your target off guard and you MUST suck since you're in a Galaxy X) he should be in an explosive cloud of space dust claiming you're a hacker. This is especially nice when the target is a cruiser, and your lance criticals for 55k on each hit.

It sounds more complicated than it really is after you get the hang of it. Find me in game I usually fly as the U.S.S. Lancea Longini.

Although I prefer the Sovereign, I wouldn't say it's a much better ship. They both use the exact same skills and are otherwise completely identical (0.15 impulse modifier, ensign and lieutenant tactical boffs, lieutenant science boff, lieutenant commander and commander engineering boffs, 4 device slots, 39000 hull, 4 fore and 4 aft weapon slots, 4 engineering consoles, 2 science consoles), except for the following exceptions:

without a 3rd tactical console with a 3rd phaser boosting console it will always be gimped in the damage dealing department compared to the sov and excel.

There is nothing wrong with the ship. People just try to compare it to other fed cruisers, but its not cruiser...its dreadnought.

The fact is, people are trying to play it as cruiser (8 beams, FAW spam) and compare it to excelsior with the same loadout and come to the "false conlusion" that it sucks.

It doesnt. It does its role. Cruisers are suistained dps ships with limited burst. The dreadnought is a "cruiser" with very high burst capability, at the cost of sustained dps. It has unique gameplay possiblity, people just throw it away and try to play it like cruiser.

Its a fair traidoff. You will never top DMG charts like other cruisers, but you WILL kill more people. Total DMG done matters little, if 90% of it is wasted / outhealed into nothing. What kills in PvP is quick burst.

Sure, you may give the dreadnought another phaser console, but that would push it past other cruisers in terms of sustained dmg also and even more boost its burst capability. Its plain wrong.

My only gripe with the ship is, that i would prefer the battlecruiser power settings +10 weapons /+10 engines on it, to distinguis it more from the other cruisers.

Also the lance could use some modest accuracy bonus and graphicaly the beam could be a little narrower with 3 shots instead 2 (with same dps) to lower the chances of one-shots.

Otherwise the ship is perfectly fine. Who says otherwise, sucks :p But dont be mistaken, its very challenging ship to play properly. Its not 8 beam/FAW easy mode cruiser.

every couple of minutes it can do a big burst, if it doesnít miss, which it will. then its useless in general combat. its got a combination of last place tactical consoles and last place maneuverability and if you put bursting weapons in the forward arc you are extra screwed after your alpha. also, any well setup escort can out alpha it easily, and more reliably, and continue to be useful afterward. not to mention the klingon cruisers that can mount dual canons, have 3 tactical consoles, and can maneuver well enough to use them. Sure they donít have the spinal, but you almost donít need it. ive done plenty of killing with sustained damage, it ends up being harder to defend against then an alpha anymore. Anyone paying attention will be able to activate 1 of the many counters, just having covariant shields is sometimes enough.
