When reading the forums I often see the advice.. "Search the forums, there's plenty of builds" You know what? There aren't a lot of builds... mainly I guess people just fly blind in leveling their builds.... so here is my build please any advice would be appreciated..

I'm a VA Engineer. I've decided to use Harpengs now to free up points from quantum and max out my engineer performance... I fly the Excelsior or Galaxy Refit any advice or questions ( since queries will help give me perspective) is welcomed.

The reason for that is that there hasn't been any changes to the skill tree or Boff abilities since launch. Add that to the special goodies that are skill point neutral or are broken abilities, and you have everyone and their mothers running the "Flavor of the month" build. If the tree was set to make more sense, the ships depended more on said abilities instead of stats and Boff station levels (escorts get the short end of the healing and defense stick) and they added more abilities, you'd see a lot more variety... provided said new abilties aren't released in a broken state, that is. :p

Wow that's a quick and terse response. Since there aren't a lot of builds to compare too on the boards. A) I have no idea what is flavor of the month or not. But B) why wouldn't I maximize my points by dropping a skill I can do without?

I'm an Engineer my DPS will never rival a Tac's but I can get by with the Harpengs just fine ( Even if they Nerf them), This week in 5 pvp matches by maxing out my Engineer skills I was far and away the biggest healer, died the fewest times and managed respectable damage numbers....

I originally posted my build because I had no known builds to compare it with. Now after flying it for a bit, I really don't care if it's flavor of the month or not it works for me....

I'm noticing in the skill planner that it is telling you to put points in spatial anomaly and tractor beam, along with some other science skills that you don't have any points in. I'm assuming that that is for a different set of BOffs.

If this is working for you, I don't see anything that I would do to improve the build, except that you might free up some points in the "efficiency" categories depending on how you set your power levels.

You've got a lot of EPtX. Do the cool downs interfere with each other?

My advice is do what you enjoy and makes you feel effective. Sure, there is some amount of Min/Maxing, but there isn't much consensus on a lot of things in this game

^- I strongly support this.

There will *always* be Flavor of the Month builds in any game. I've seen them there as well; it's part of how things just happen. There is also often 'counter threads' about how to 'crack' the FotM builds. Also normal.

In the end it very much depends on preference. If someone wants to follow the trend, they will find themselves having to rebuild often; get specific gear often... or they can ask about more general builds or "Hey, how can I be more efficient using phaser turrets in ground maps?". Some users may post "Lulz, they suck, you should do X instead" - thank them and let them know you'd really like to know more about turrets.

I agree entirely.

For those of you who remember WoW, do you recall when a particular class got a rather insane buff that made it (temporarily) overpowered? It cycled often enough that my myriad alts all had time to shine in their own little spotlight. STO's has been far steadier with it's flavour of the month (should I say flavour of the half-year?), but I imagine the more content and rewards there are, the greater the likelihood of this flavour cycling.

In the end, DEFINITELY play what feels enjoyable. If what you feel is enjoyable happens to be the flavour of the month, well, then that's what you ought to play - just consider it interesting that you have similar tastes with a lot of people If what you play differs drastically, well, then consider it interesting that you work so well in diversity! (Plus it throws people off when they're expecting you to play something differently than you are)

That's probably my biggest concern.... I find that epts1 cool down isn't that long so I can rotate it with epts3 and get constant shield heals... I thinking of swapping out epta because as was pointed out by my friend I can either hit EPS or an Aux battery for the same effect.

My son is Eng in Cruiser too. He will not go without EPtE, to chase down fleeing escorts. Do you really need EPtA? ET1 is a bit low but I think you have ET2 based on your post. For PvP Extend Shields is awesome for teamwork. If you like foreward firepower in a Cruiser try the Galaxy X, it turns slower though. That reminds me, AuxtID can help you turn faster and resist shockwaves. Eject Warp Plasma is another good hold/damage ability you might try.
Have fun.
