As others have already posted...I found the defiant -r fun to fly.

however in pvp it was just too darn squishy.....enemy focus fires and before you can even evasive out you have gone pop.

I switched the the fleet escort as it is much tougher and tends not to explode as much as the defiant

Most of my PvP time has been in cruisers. Recently I leveled my Tac and strapped on my Defiant-R and jumped into the PvP fray. With an afternoon of PvP under my belt in this ship I came to one conclusion. I need to rename my ship the U.S.S. Challenger because it blows up so much.

Defiant R needs to be nerfed? Ho you need to learn how to play as it's already been stated many times over a Defiant-R is easy to kill and i know because i tried forever to pilot one, if anything it needs a battle cloak or a really really REALLY strong hull because anyone with a little skill can avoid getting taken out in a defiants alpha strike nowadays and if you're crying foul now you should have been around for before the nerf escorts got at the start of season 2

Defiant is fine. If any escort needs to be nerfed it's the MVAM (specifically beta section)

I fly one being and Engineer captain I can tank yes, for a short period of time, but any one with half a brain knows I do not have a lot of backup tank abilities when I am under pressure, a single SNB is the end of me, or a good alpha strike.

At the same time I lack burst damage being an engineer to deal with cruisers.

result it is fine, perhaps even a tad underpowered in some areas, but in no real need of a buff or nerf.

SciScorts FTW!
Defiants are fine, all you have to do is slow them, Tractors, Engine Plasma, Target Engines....bring that bonus defense to zero and they're as squishy as pie ...(with a lil subnoob for flavor maybe? )

Like the above posters have said till they're blue in the face, be prepared for alphas...Tac Team, RSP, EPtS, ect ect...its not hard.

I play a Engineering captian who used to fly escorts. I even own one of those nice and fancy Defiant Refits. Love the ship, hated how I was too vulnerable. Also hated how I had to really forgo beams in favor of the harder hitting cannons to be competitive. So I switched to a cruiser.

I can effectively take on three equal level captains in my cruiser by myself and still one out on top. It's all in how you design your ship. The powers you chose, as well as the skills you spec into. The skills make the biggest difference, increasing the potency of your powers a couple fold.

I know there a quite a few powerful defiant designs, but, as it has been explained to me, an escort should not be soloing, much less soloing a cruiser. A cruiser was designed to take a pounding, which is shy they can be such powerful targets, but escorts can maximize damage potential for a critical shot crippling an enemy ship in a much smaller window of time then any other ship.

If you can't use the defiant, then I would suggest maybe looking into a different ship class as escorts might not be your strong suit. other suggestions I have is maybe putting weapons to auto fire so you can better focus on shield manipulation and power management, as well as maneuvering. The less buttons you have to press, the more you can get accomplished. And the less distracted you will be.

Oh and some final words of advice. PvP is very competitive. Not many designs stand the test in the competitive arena. If you plan on being competitive, then you will more then likely have to find a buildthat is PvP specific and run with it. PvE content isn't nearly as brutal, so you have much more freedom in what you want to do. I found that an Engineering captain in an escort made a great ship combo, except for those nasty borg cubes that removed my shields, and my only real form of protection.
