# 1 PvP and Star Trek
06-23-2011, 02:36 PM
PvP in this game (supposedly based on the Star trek universe) does not attract large numbers of Federation captains and in its present form it never will.
There is no weapon in ST that totally disables all systems on a starship for several seconds.
You can't target subsystems unless your adversary's shields are down. Targeting a ship's shield generators when the shields are up is ridiculous. Mixing and matching beam types is not ST.
PvP cannot help but break the immersion for ST fans playing this supposed ST game because it simply contains too many non- ST elements (too many to list). I also notice that these element are constantly being fought about as being OPed. Good. Get rid of them.

Feds with phasers and photons or quantums is ST. Klingons with Disruptors and photons and quantums is ST.
Everything else is not something a real ST fan is interested in.
The current PvP system has no place in a ST based game IMHO.
That being said if you like STO PvP then more power to you but don't expect the majority of ST fans to play it casue it just aint gonna happen.

This is wrong. During TNG, Picard or Riker would usually call out subsystems that were to be disabled, regardless of the enemy's shield status. Same thing for Voyager and Janeway/Chakotay.

The "bleedthrough" effect we have in this game is basically trying to mimic the fact that consoles and stuff on the ship blows up even though its shields are still holding. The same effect also explains why you can target subsystems while the shield is still running.

I believe the only thing I would agree on with here is that targeting shields doesn't seem to fit. I don't really remember them targeting that ever. Weapons and Engines (typical TNG/VOY targets) and Life Support (Startrek IX) I remember as targets.
Still this is not a PvP thing, these skills work in PvE just as well as in PvP (if not better.)

This is definitely not a PvP thing.

My apologies.
I should have said there is no weapon known to Federation or Klingon science that can totally disable a ships systems for several seconds.

The Klingons are the only race who's PvE rewards are being tied to PvP.
That in itself shows the popularity of PvP among Fed players.
What percentage of Fed captains would you say are avid PvPers?
We'll find out when all the new Fed content is released.
All I ever read is complaining from the PvP community.
This is overpowered. That needs balancing. Nerf this. Make that more powerful. Stop the Sci spammers etc.
LOL
When the choice is playing a mission in the ship you like the best or being forced to select a certain class of captain and ship based on the role you have to fill in PvP I'm absolutely sure the former is the choice for the vast majority of folks for their monthly fee.
I've read the stories of lots of folks who aren't happy that their cruiser is only good as a tank or their escort is only good for DPS.
I enjoy the occasional PvP match but there's no getting around the fact that when Ker'rat is the daily most Fed captains complete it and warp out. I just don't see Cryptic devoting vast resources to something that the majority don't participate in and the ones that do all agree is broken.
Maybe I'm wrong.
