There's something that has bugged me in STO for some time now, and that's by the end of the game....you are railroaded into just a few ship types, which may or may not be your favorite ship.
I would love to see a system where you could take any ship available and refit it to be a T5 ship, with applicable weapons, Boff, and console slots. I know it probably won't happen, as it would infringe on the C-Store (Cryptic can just sell T5 versions...), but it would be really awesome to be able to have a T5 Constitution, or a T5 Akira or such.
I have a whole inventory full of ships, but in reality only like, 1 of them is usable. My old ships are still there, just....sitting there, useless.
When I think of "endgame" being used in the context of an MMO I immediately say, what?
I think having a selection of ships just sitting there "useless" is more a question of playstyle than having a lack of good ships to fly. I personally enjoy shaking things up on occasion and respec into a new ship (engy in a fleet escort is fun) and I like to test various builds and playstyle and more often than not I have a skill planner open just to muck around with, tribble is also handy for safely testing builds without having to spend any tokens. I think that certain ships are often overlooked because of (in my mind) seemingly irrelevant details such as a lack of hull hp or tankability than you might be used too, or the seeming lack of firepower vs one ship to another.
There is give and take with every ship, perhaps some more than others, but they're all good ships and if you play around with builds and playstyles and try new things you might find some of those "useless" ships a lot more fun. It might also be a good idea to start talking to people you know are very knowledgable about the game and are familiar with how each skill affects what ability and so forth, a second and sometimes third opinion is good to get your bearings but ultimately it's up to you to evaluate what works best for you.
This is a very controversial topic, because there are many people who do not like the idea of the Enterprise from TOS coming up against and beating the Sovereign class Enterprise-E.
Most of them seem to also be against the Excelsior being able to beat a Sovereign class, but there really isn't anything that can be done about it since it's already happened.
This is unfortunate, because there have been some interesting ideas for an upgrade system. However, the devs have said that they are not willing to discuss this subject because of the potential for flame wars. There has been talk about creating your own ships, but in general the devs seem to be in support of continuing to make retrofits available in the C-store as the means of upgrade.
I will add that in most MMOs, there really ARE only two or three choices which are viable for the endgame. The raid gear which is needed for endgame content controls your appearance, and thus you have no choice in how you look. This is also easier for the devs since it gives them less options to balance.
Why couldn't all the ships in your stable just upgrade with you? It seems really silly to have all those ships just sitting there useless to you.
This would be nice, you could still have the higher teir ships have some statistical advantage but it should be narrowed and more freedom to modify what could be equiped on all ships would make it more interesting from the standpoint that no one would be able to say for sure what any particualr ship could do based on ship class alone.
