Just hit VA a few days ago on my 1st character. While I was levelling I tried pretty much every ship class at some point. Visually nothing beats a Cruiser, however I find I do "better" in a Escort. Heres the problem tho, I dont much like the gameplay and the "feel" of cannons. So my question is this:

Can you run Beams on a Tac and not totally gimp yourself?

Example: Front 3x DBBs + Quant
Rear 2x BAs + Quant (torp or mines)

I would arrange BoFFs with powers to take advantage of beams of course: BO, FAW, and HYT for the Quants.

Is this even viable or would I be better of running a beam cruiser? Im flying a advanced escort atm.

Thanks

I'm not a ship build expert but I think you can pull this off, instead of running frontal attacks you couldskill into engine efficiency/performance and fly broadsiding circly around eneyms staying out of their best firing angles.
For torps I would go ols school as well.
Try photons. With an escort you can bring them to bear very quickly and they fire more rapidly.

There is a good guide to pvp escorts that bigred posted http://forums.startrekonline.com/sho...d.php?t=195733
however if your building for pve then you can use what ever you want as most any build will work. However most pvp builds can make pve content a pretty much cake walk.

that really only works in pve, that play style leans more to cruisers

Except teh cruiser won't benefit much froma high torpedo fire rate or defense bonus by speed.
At least this might be a worthy build if you are an engineer on an escort and doable as a tac.
It would be interesting to know if an escort can gain so much survivability just by virtue of avoiding to be hit.

I combine a combo of duals and dual heavies, they each have a slightly different rate of fire, and being different types they can proc at separate times. I in fact run a dual beam, dual cannon, and dual heavy on my escort.

As long as you run one RCS console and know that you have to cut your speed to half upon entering combat. Dual Heavies are really the only way to go. You give up way, way to much damage and proc's going beams. You need to hit hard and fast in an escort.

It's good and viable, but you're missing out on a lot of firepower.

To be honest, cruisers don't really offer much over escorts, atleast in terms of PvE. Escorts have enough survivability that it hardly becomes an issue and of course they do an awful lot more damage then cruisers.

DBBs are perfectly viable for Escorts.

However, you're really going to be missing out on a lot if you don't use Dual (Heavy) Cannons. They're exclusive to Escorts, whereas everyone else can use DBBs.

If your going after the proc, go dual cannons. If you don't mind the proc, go dual heavy. Both deliver the same DPS, but dual heavies hit less often for harder.
