(i) Belonging to another individual or entity with the intent to impersonate that individual or entity, including without limitation, impersonating any Cryptic agent or employee or any other Cryptic community user;
(viii) Taken from Star Trek products, including character names from the Star Trek series of novels, movies, television series or other Star Trek products and media;
Unfortunately, Cryptic rarely enforces this policy.
I usually look for a VA rank on their health bar, to tell the players from the NPCs. NPCs will just have one tiny thin bar, players will have the big 3 quadrangle VA rank indicator.
There are all kinds of behavior Cryptic does not allow - but they can't watch it automatically, you have to report misconduct of this kind.
Agreed, we have to at least do our part and raise an in game GM ticket. As pointed out by other posters in this thread, mimicking Security Escorts is not just cheating, but against Cryptic's Rules of Conduct. I'll be reporting any players I encounter in future, and request others do the same.
Unfortunately, this doesn't remove the problem when you target them, you can't easily tell whether you have nd NPC targetted or not, from their health bar. It looks practically identical.

This is the way to tell. You can also bind a key: /bind <key> "target Security Escort III " where there is a space after the name for one of them - the second I've seen does not have a space, but the one with the space tends to be the more dangerous..
Then there's Security Escort XII, which isn't an issue because of the X.
You can turn off the autotargeting for npc objects and player pets in the options/control tab.
This way you will never target any pets. its easy to tell if the escort is a player, if tab targeting selects him, he is.
