Here is an idea Cryptic can use for an STO community minigame: Vote for a new Fed president.
As the current UFP president Annek Okeg of Sauria is nearing the end of her term, its time for member worlds to vote for a new political leader.
It can work similar to the Design the New Enterprise contest, but it will involve players submitting a Foundry created character, perhaps with a short biography. Open slots for new characters will only be accepted for a specified time, and then stopped so the voting will begin with the submitted "candidates". The STO community can vote who they like the most, and for the duration of the elections (perhaps a few weeks), the candidates with the least votes will be eliminated from the presidential race per week.
The player who submitted the winning president can get some sort of prize from the Cryptic team, e.g. Atari tokens, very rare item, new costume, new accolade, etc.
Something similar can happen for the Klingon Empire such as perhaps backing a new chancellor for the Empire as confidence in J'mpok's leadership may be waning, or maybe a new councilor in the Great Hall. Players can submit a Foundry created Klingon faction character, and the process can be like the Fed scenario.
I would like to know what everyone thinks about this, as this proposal can have major implications on the storyline of STO, hopefully making the game that much more interesting!
This is rather interesting. I will not go into details, but CCP had a similar event a year or two ago where they ran elections for the President of an ingame faction. Now no votes were cast by players, but it was a roleplay event that lasted at least four weeks if I recall. It gave rise to articles written by the company about things going on surrounding the event, about the candidates and so forth.
It was also a motivation for the community to post their own responses etc in RP form in the RP forum - something we lack in a way.
I wonder if Nan Bacco is still alive in 2409 and what her take on such an event would be (ST: Articles of the Federation).
Maybe it's just that this game reminds me a lot of Babylon 5, plot-wise, and Riker reminds me of Sheridan, minus the religious angle, but this is why I said awhile back that I could see a scenario where all the candidates turn out to be Undine and Riker runs. He's kinda the Captain America of the Federation and his wife is a prominent diplomat... and if they want to play up the state of affairs with the wars, Riker would really symbolize that by having a staunchly strategic military man in the position, he had sortof a Reagan/Clinton charm, and he's militaristic without being a buzzcut drill sergeant type, which might seem untrustworthy.
Beyond that, I always felt like he was being setup for bigger things but he never got to command the Enterprise... And he's not likely to command Earth Space Dock at this point, and 40 years of commanding the Titan seems like plenty. Riker needs a new role. For me, he'd make a fine Federation President and that would keep his role relatively small at the same time so that Cryptic could hopefully use Frakes but wouldn't ever be locked into NEEDING to use him beyond a single round of voiceover.
And in a game with Odo heading the Dominion and Kira serving as Kai and Rom as Nagus, well... Riker makes more sense to me as Federation President than any of those guys do as longterm leaders for their factions.
