# 1 Interactive Bridge Mode
07-22-2011, 07:14 PM
Proposal to allow control of ship whilst in bridge mode.

In short, this mode would allow the player to get a view of the action from the big chair.

At a bare minimum:

> Viewscreen would show a first-person view of the situation with mouse actions to orient.

> Zoom feature on viewscreen.

> Ability to easily toggle viewscreen between first person and 3rd person (aka current space view - for when 1st person doesn't cut it)

> Ability to toggle between controlling player character and player ship - Controlling player is identical to current bridge mode but with a viewscreen that works. Controling ship is normal space bindings with camera POV set to captains chair looking at viewscreen

Quick Wins:

> A few computer-voice recordings for the common issues - eg minor/major/critical damage to Engines/Phasers. When damage is repaired, the computer could report that too.

> Red (And Yellow?) alert lighting/klaxon - possibly also the usual warning on tertiary displays.

> UI/bridge model shake on torpedo impact/serious damage

> Embed the current dialogue options in the viewscreen (not sure how easy it would be to suppress the existing dialogue so this might not be quick/easy depending on your architecture)

> Explosion when ship destroyed

Some ideas that could make it a killer feature but would probably require considerable work:

> Voice actors (6 male, 6 female?) each BOff could be randomly assigned a voice - perhaps on a per-class basis. You can take this as far as you like - common commands "Full Impulse. Aye" - maybe abilities "Remodulating shields", "Transferring emergency power to weapons". Replacing the computer voice for some things "We're under attack" could come from the tactical officer. You could even go as far as "Captain, we're being hailed", "2 Klingon vessels entering sensor range" etc...
You'd need a number of versions of each statement to avoid it sounding too repetitive.

> Useful information on some of the displays on the bridge with the ability to easily focus on them and return to the viewscreen - eg List of all enemies in range including hull/shield info at tactical, Ship/Shield information on the engineering stations, etc.

> Destructible interiors to match exteriors - wiring from ceiling, exploding consoles, etc... Even just swapping textures would be fantastic - new to charred with a "bang/flash"

Let me know what you think / what we can do to improve this suggestion.

This would be a fantastic addition to the space combat aspect. More immersion while leaving the option open for people who want to use the original view-mode!

I think this idea would be great, if it can be done. It would really give players a more trek feel. as far as the voice acting, im fine with the computer or nothing at all. I just want to fly my ship from my bridge. SWG did it, time to take STO to that level of immersion.

This has been suggested before, and to basically sum it up: Not possible at this time.

Fair enough. For curiosity's sake, does anyone know why?

At its most simple, you could remove the ship from space view, set the camera to the ship's location and add a model of the bridge in front of everything.

All we have been told, is that from a technical standpoint, it is not possible, most likely because the bridge and space are both maps (of the same type) in their own right...

Your solution has been done however. a website included details on how to do this, but due to changes in the EULA the creator decided to shut down the project.
