For a long time, I've been beaten by a landslide when going against players using the Defiant-R. It's clearly obvious that it needs a nerf. I agree that the Cloak is cool and that its a fun ship to play, but the fact is its SO OP that its hard to tell that its an escort as opposed to one of the developers' personal toys that got loose. Cruisers and Science ships don't stand a chance against it, and the cloak only makes it that much more powerful. I've seen too many people using this strategy:
Cloak---Get Close---Fire off buffs---Uncloak---Lay waste and defeat in under 3 seconds---recloak
This is typically 1 on 1.
Even when you have a group, the ship can easily outgun the enemy 3-to-1.
ESPECIALLY When equipped with the Borg set. It is just TOO powerful.
ya it needs a nerf but not its dps. its tanking is better then some cruisers and i have seen many times one of them tanking 4-5 klingons and getting 1-2 kills. if you know their is one flying around put all power to shields and use epts when ever you can even if you dont see it. this will help you big time and if you can take those first shoots you stand a good chance of wining. if your dps is more forward then revers your way into arcs and you cant lose him but every 10 or so sec stop revers for a sec to stop the power drain.
It's an Escort. Low hull. Someone could set traps against one of these things, and here's how:
Step 1 - Set up a ship as "bait". Preferably this would be a Tank setup (LRSV Retrofit recommended; Deploy Armor upon attack), to survive the first barrage.
Step 2 - Tank and/or allied attacking ship locks a Tractor Beam (You know, that nifty BOff power that holds and disables cloak. If you can, use the Assimilated Tractor Beam from the Borg set to steal all their power) while the other ships batter your little Defiant down.
Step 3 - Once the Tractor Beam wears off (it's only got max 10 seconds), set up a trap of Charged Particle Bursts and Eject Warp Plasmas to re-disable cloak to finish the job.
Step 3 (Alternative) - Get an Advanced Research Science Vessel (Nebula) Refit and pop Tachyon Detection grid before he cloaks again, so as to have great stealth-sight and hit him while he's cloaked (because shields will be DOWN).
Step 4 - ???
Step 5 - Profit!
So yeah, just make sure you can survive long enough for your friends to beat it down. You do have friends, don't you?
I fly a Defiant.... and I've never been able to tank four or five Klingons. Ever think maybe theres an Engineer flying it? Defiant is fine as is. It's supposed to be tougher than the standard Bird of Prey to make up for the lack of a battle cloak. That's the trade off.
Defiant is fine the way it is. If your getting your butt kicked by it time and again learn how to fight it. Its not hard and she certainly doesnt have that many tricks up her sleeve. The cloak is negligable
IF anything given the way heals are spammed in PvP the damage output of ALL escorts needs to be increased. I can almost effortlessly tank 2 Defiants in a cruiser. Tactical team, RSP and emergency to shields 3...
As a Def-R pilot, while spec'ed fully for hit & run, I only get kills within 5 seconds if the opponent is inexperienced, unprepared, and/or distracted by my teammates. Otherwise it takes about 10 seconds, or I have to run if I've failed to kill my target - which gives you plenty of time to defend yourself. There are plenty of counters to alpha strikes. A combo of Tac Team & EPtS as soon as you hear someone cloaked popping of their powers or even immediately after they begin firing at you works well for me. Other tactics mentioned above work well too, such as FBP, tractors, RSP, or good old-fashioned teamwork.
A hit & run defiant that can get quick alpha strike kills are glass cannons, and therefore are very squishy and easily poppaple. The only tac captained defiants that can tank well have to sacrifice burst damage. I know because that's how I used to have my defiant spec'ed and I rarely got kills in my first wave of attack. Engineer captains can tank their defiants well, also with a sacrifice to burst damage - and therefore making it difficult to get 5 second, one salvo kills.
If I didn't run after being damaged & focus fired, I would die quite often in PvP.
