We asked for an option, in addition to existing tab targeting, that would allow us to cycle through player ships (ignoring NPCs). After a while, and thankfully so, they gave us the option to ignore NPCs. Unfortunately, because this wasn't a separate new option, if we elect to use this setting we can only target NPCs, heavy torpedoes, and other objects by selecting them with our mouse. They came really close to giving us what we want/need but fell just a little short. I keep hoping they'll come back around and finish this feature.
That being said, it never occurred to me that we should be able to tell our tactical officers to target Players, NPCs, and Mines through the UI. I like it! Especially if those icons can be bound to a key. I'd be really interested in seeing more on this.
Oh to clarify the picture is supposed to be my target. So if i am targeting a ship, their deployables appear as below.
I disable friendly npc targeting boxes when flying my carrier and the result is a clean cool looking space battle. Once you loose all those little boxes seeing fighters zipping around is so impressive and cinematic.
I also think a carrier should have the same icons pop up above their own power tray, so they can see at a glance what deployables they have out and are still alive.
