# 1 Getting through Lt. Commander?
08-02-2011, 07:50 AM
Honestly, I'm finding a number of the missions to be fairly lackluster while I'm at Lt. Commander.

I left STO in December and came back a couple weeks ago. I don't play a lot (I've got a day job, and am a solo recording/performing artist at night), so leveling is obviously a slow process for me.. but Lt. Commander ranks seems to be slower than most. I'm Lt. C 4 right now. Sure, I can go out and do patrol missions, but the repetition can get old.. Not to mention waiting for a reset on an existing instance so I can actually get my kills.

The ground combat revamp (shooter mode) has made ground missions MUCH better, of course, but I'm still a huge fan of the space combat.

Am I whining too much? Or am I just not realizing the good content that's out there?

*edit* FYI, I'm an escort piloting tac officer.

The game currently has 6 primary mission types: Feature Episodes, Episode, SF Patrols, Exploration, Deep Space Encounter, and Fleet Actions. Level progression assumes that you are going to do all the Episodes and SF Patrols and generally either a 3-series of Exploration or DSEs. The Feature Episodes are leveling padding, as far Fleet Action zones. And, of course, you always have PvP as an option as well - though I don't consider those missions.

If you are assuming you can only level doing Episodes and Feature Episodes, and entirely avoid the other mission types then that is where your problem lies. You might consider Patrols or Exploration "boring" but it is still required mission play if you want to advance. Beyond that, Lt Cmdr doesn't go any slower then any other rank. If you're only Lt Cmdr 4 you probably haven't done the Gateway missions yet, and you have Doomsday coming up at Lt Cmdr 6, and then you're off to Alpha Centauri and the Romulan front.

The Patrol, Defend and Exploration missions do get repetitive, but they are an essential part of the game. You are going to need to play them if you want to rank up. Even if you don't devote but a few hours to the game at a time you should be able to burn through LC in no time at all. I found LT and LC to be pretty boring, but once you hit CM things start to pick up.

Yeah, hang in there - the first two ranks are really a grind to get through; Once you hit Commander, the missions are better and if you play steadily you'll build up the ranks faster

If anything run the feature episodes over and over again, decent xp and you can sell off all the items you get to have a fortune for making an awesome ship and well armed ground crew when you hit Cmdr.

This. I run the FE's instead of the other 'grind missions'.

Doh, I just realized I AM Commander, meant to say going through Commander to Captain. Going to try running the featured missions again, as those were pretty fun.

Keep in mind that you can replay any Mission in case there is secondary rewards in that Mission you want to pick up.

You can solo through most of the missions, but I found it to be more if you bring a friend or 2 along for the ride. They can help you with the harder stuff as well as making the grind seem less tedious. I'm working on some Alts a little at a time. It's slow going solo, but when I can get a fleet mate to help me out It makes the repatition of these missions for the 2nd and 3rd time go by faster and smoother. Just about all MMOs have thier repatative natured missions. But the features episodes do help giving you a break. Keep up with it.

This. The personal shield from Skirmish is very good, and you can repeat the mission until you and all your boffs have one. Then go back when you get promoted and upgrade all of them! You'll also earn a lot of SPs into the bargain and you can test out different tactics on the Cardie mobs when you run the mission again and again.

When you return after promotion (to upgrade your shields), you can also sell the outdated ones for a deeply discounted price at most item vendors; even most bound items can be sold in this way for at least a few ECs.
