Resec'd my Fed Sci character last night to play more into the characters strength's with the Interpid Retrofit. It really breathed a new lease of life into the game instead of fumberling around with Escorts and cruisers. I'm very pleased with the result.

Currently running 4 phasers with front and aft Photon torp's. Is this the best kind of weapon set up for this craft?

My one problem though is with this new 'quick' ground combat. Three hits and i'm down, no time to use any abilities usefully and I've noticed that my BOff's no longer use their tribbles to heal after combat!!! I'm not really conviced that the BOff's use all their abilities very well either now, especially the sci officer. THe new combat has also made anything other than 'Large' hypo's or shields obsolete. Even the large shield heal is pretty pointless as it gets wiped out so quick.

The new lower shield and amrour values wouldn't be so bad if they had increased the recharge rate so your shields healed quicker to compensate for them going down in a shot.

There are many possible setups, and part of it depends on your power choices. I generally prefer Quantum Torpedoes over PHoton Torpedoes. QTs look nicer, and the individual torp hits harder. As enemy shields are never fully down for long, it's more important to pack a lot of punch into one spike then try to deal consistent DPS (that mostly get reduced by 75 % when it hits shields).

My LRSV-R uses a shield drain build (Main offensive powers are Charged Particuel Burst 3, Tachyon Beam 3 and Photonic Shockwave), and thus I use only 3 beam arrays, 1 Quantum Launcher front and aft, and one Tri-Cobalt Torpedo front.

I know that other people build a more weapon damage focused builds.

It has become more important to "draw aggro" and use cover (anything that blocks line of sight) and dispatch single enemies quickly overall, but I am not a Ground Combat expert. For a start, you might try a healing-focused kits, that might make it a little easier (possibly with plenty of BOs dying) at first, and later try more aggressive builds.

generally people go with quantum torpedos as they pack a much bigger punch per hit. Considering shields are only down generally for a fraction of a second you need to punch as much hull dmg as you can while they are down before they regen.

Photon have higher dps cause they fire faster, but firing faster against shields that are up is kinda pointless. Photon + quatum launcher is a good combo but skill point heavy investing in both. Lots of people run Dual beam banks, DBB, up front in the intrepid because it has a high turn rate.

Sci captains when they hit RA i believe get a passive +100 or so to shield regen i think. Cant remember the exact number. +35% shield cap console + sci ship shield bonus, and decent shield power. You can get remarkably high regen with say the borg shield. Especially with Boff abilities like TSS/EptS increasing it.

Yeah i was using Quantums for a bit but Photons fire quicker. I guess if i work on my tactics a bit more i can use quantums after getting the shields down. i.e. tractor beam, tachyon pulse, phasers and then quantum.

I was thinking about the DBB, I might try that tonight as it would back up the above tactic but i would also loose the fire power to the sides. However the gravity well and rift that i use a front facing anyway so the DBB would play to those advantages.

Thanks for the insight, I'll give it a go.

One thing you might consider when going with forward Dual Beams: Equip Turrets in the aft. This will reduce your side and aft-fire arc damage further, but you will gain some front DPS, and that is ultimately why you would be going for Dual Beam Banks in the first place.
