Akira is a beautiful ship, but it needs to be a crusier. That was its role in Star Trek. Don't know why it was made an escrot. (Its official desigination is type: Heavy Crusier)
I think they made it escort because it was a torpedo boat
Don't think it make much sense as a cruiser nor an escort it is a bit of a middle child

To be honest, in STO, "Escort" = "Warship".
The Akira IS a warship. That's what its designer called it, that was what it was built for, that was the role it had on screen. The Federation may call it a "cruiser", but that's because the Federation never calls anything a "warship".
The Sovereign is also a warship, but then by virtue of being at Tier 5, the Sovereign gets to be both a Cruiser and a warship.

That is true. In fact, I think it's more of a Cruiser/Escort hybrid than the Hermes, which although it supposedly has fleet support abilities, is much smaller. The thing is, though, a "cruiser" is just that, it is a ship which is designed to "cruise". It has a very long range. The Akira is more like a very long range battleship than a naval cruiser.
I think in general Escorts are meant to be the counterpart to destroyers, but the Akira and Prometheus (as a single ship which "breaks up" into destroyers) get up in size to be larger than that. Also keep in mind the Qin Raptor is 400 meters long, making it the same length (in game) as the Akira. That's another thing, the ingame Akira knocks off about 40 meters from the canon length.
The ting the Akira was above all, was easy to build able to preform all the duties a mid sized ship should be able to do which meant a lot of them where build, the design worked, but it never really had a dedicated purpose within the fleet, in fact if you think on the whole carrier thing would have been quickly scrapped and the space taken up for other things just because it would be more efficient.
So really Akira has solid enough range, can do all that is needed, was easy to build and could pack a punch with all those torpedoes making it a perfect second ship of the line just behind the big boys providing a deadly array of fire power while avoiding the main incoming fire. Seeing that this is just the position escorts are in they made her an escort and in fan fiction the Akira is often used to support stations or larger vessels.
Anyway I like the akira because it is so versatile I remember a pen and paper RPG I was on had the carrier version, but we didn't bring any fighters, but a few dozen runabouts our main duty was space mapping, so the runabouts would fly out into a grid for a few days allowing us to cover a insanely large amount of space. Just shows what one can do with this ship.
The T2 escort is a POS. I hated that thing. I think I already got rid of it. It’s my least favorite T2 ship.
If I could, I would have pulled that thing out at Sol and used it to test my cannons; obliterating it in front of the admiral who thought it was a good idea to commission tinfoil with a bb gun.

Personally i have always felt the Akira Class was more like a Destroyer but hey that's just me

Um guys im not talking about the Akira class at all. Akira is Tier 3.
Lets get back on the road to Tier2 shall we? :p
Well I guess it was worth a try, lets close this topic then.
Tier 4, so the problem remains of VA's are limited to the Defiant, yet again.
Putting ships in different tiers doesnt solve our problems, unfortunately.
Well since Cryptic doesnt respond to my request to make a scalable tier system, I can only ask for it to become available as VA.
Why do you want a ship at Captain level when you can get Vice Admiral one/two days later?
Its just ..... Waste of time.
Except that Tier 5 has both the Promethous and the Hermes/Gryphon/Dervish/Malelstrom. I see VAs everywhere use them. Also, Tier 5.5 has the MVAM Promethius with a different BOFF layout in addition to the Cloaking Defiant.
I would not mind seeing a Tier 5 Akira serve as the Federation's ONLY carrier. It would fit with what the original ship designer proposed.
I fail to see how VA are limitied to just the defiant, you have fleet escort, adv escort, defaint, and the adv escort retofit. And do not bother telling me one is soooo much better then the other cause i will gladly stomp some a$$ with any of these ships. People who make that kind of statement dont adjust their boffs or tactics, no ship tactics are the exact same.
If you fly a defaint like you would a fleet escort youll get murdered, same the other way around. There is no T5.5 all the retrofits are even with all other T5 ships they give up things in order to gain others, i still fly a sov on my eng, and recon on my sci, my tac flys an defiant before that he flew a reg old promethus forever i happen to just be a bigger fan of the defaints looks, my last toon is a tac who flys an excel just for fun.
And while the designer of the akira came up with it being a carrier, in the show the model doesnt have the shuttle bays he is talking about, in the show it never launches fighters. A T5 akira is on the way but they said it wont be a carrier because it never actually WAS one.

Yeh Its not exactly true you are only limited to the defiant, but you know where im getting at.
But i fail to see why you mention that i would possibly bother you with the story that Defiants are so much better then the rest of the escorts? Nowhere here I mention or claim that it is. So can you elaborate?
I just dont like the MVAM, nor do i particulary like the Fleet escort, it loooks like a vacuum cleaner. Its just that I would wish to see low tier ships on the tier5 level. But indeed I can kick some *** with all of these Escorts nevertheless.

You're right, they all gain something, and lose something.
Never the less keep it on topic, its about the tier 2 escort NOT the Akira. Then you should go to another Thread. Thanks.
