Ever noticed how most lead sci-fi characters first name begins with a 'J' and are often called John?
John Sheridan - Babylon 5
John Crichton - Farscape
John Sheppard - STA
John Shepard - Mass Effect
Jonathan Archer - Ent
Jean Luc Picard - TNG
John Connor - Terminator
Jack O'Neil - SG1
Jeffrey Sinclair - Babylon 5
James Kirk - TOS
Is it pure coincidence, or is there some reason the letter J gets picked so much, with John in particular? Is there any other letters or names that are used this frequently for lead characters in sci-fi?
It's a common name, and undeniably American (and British too, but that's ok, because we air loads of our shows over there), and it sounds strong and straightforward and stuff. It has a lot of appeal. But yes, it may be overused.
Why do so many Science Fiction shows and movies start with the letters "T, S, or R"?
It's something I noticed while alphebetizing my DVD collection.. there are plenty of examples that break the pattern, but a huge number of them seem to fall in this section of the alphabet. (though I know a lot of it is because of "trans", "star" , "space" and "robot")
