Try a full frontal attack with four single cannons and then you'll see...with also four turrets to maximize the dps....but be careful, because you've to move closer to the target below 5 Km. It's very risky but very exciting! And considering that cannons have a firing arc of 180 degrees and they don't suffer too much the drain energy, in my opinion four cannons plus turrets with CRF are far better than two dual beam banks plus two other single beams with BO.
Absolutely right! This is the standard weapon loadout in my AC Nemesi and it works great to deliver a sustained dps broadside and for a spike dps frontal attack. But the Excelsior is another story, the Tactical Liutenant Commander enables a better defense with APO1 or a more devastating attack with BO3 or CRF2. Also, its better turn rate makes a cannons plus turrets full frontal attack easier. But...what a pity for the old and ugly design...sigh...
Why was it boasted that you can be a tank in a cruiser, when the truth is that the escorts have better weapons, better power levels, faster engines, and better tactical buffs? All the cruisers got are engineering buffs that aren't worth crap because they get debuffed by offensive science buffs or over powered by the escorts tactical buffs. I am pretty angry today that I couldn't beat an escort one on one. His ship was not just faster, his hull and shields lasted everything I threw at him, the then he cut through my shields like butter and blew me a way with one shot. It happend all 6 times. nonoe of my buffs worked. Now i see why escorts get all the kills and hights scores. The creators made them to be superior ships and trick us into thinking otherwise. The only ship a cruiser can stand up to is another cruiser given that the other ship doesn't get help. Why do the experts say we should arm cruisers with beam weapons when beams only cut hull 1% per shot, and you have to overload your beam to do and real damage. I asked for rear cannons for cruiser because they turn too slow but I was told no by someone who don't use cruisers. Now, whats the point in flying a cruiser to be a tank when there is no such thing when it comes to DPS ships?

The excelsior is the millenium falcon of star trek lore "she ain't much to look at, but she's got it where it counts". Simple, over powered and underrated. A true sleeper. I adore my excelsior!
For example I mix and match a bit but drop torps and anything with a narrow fairing arc.
So I have Beam Arrays, Turrets and Mines. I developed a build to suit it and its fun for me atm.
I have a couple of nasty debuffs waiting for anyone getting in front..... my aft is well covered with mines, weaps and EWP. Broadside... you aint gonna last long there. 4 arrays and 2 turrets..... and the skills to back them up and keep them going.
Oh yeah, I adore too my Excelsior, a powerful eagle hidden inside a weak duck! Now, if only it was also a pretty ship it would be perfect!
Sorry about that Alexin but...are you really sure your skills and abilities are top notch? And what about using the right consoles, a smart handling of the subsystems power and a fine set of keybinds? Seems to me you're underpowered against a single escort. If you can survive after the first vicious attack, if the escort is not able to run away you should hit her very hard. Here's why those nasty klingon Bops are always together, to destroy in a single but multiple attack a cruiser that can tank very well as said by Artificialx. I tank very well even if I am not an engineer!
