It's just occured to me that people trying PVP late in their "toon's" career may be a problem.

Consider low level PVP, you've got say a T2 connie, you've got very few powers to allocate, very few to counter, and you've got plenty of time to learn basics like teamwork, shield balancing, and positioning etc.
In contrast, if you jump in at VA, you've got a plethora of powers to chose from, and even more you'll likely have to counter in some manner. With more than just a few fundamental powers to pick from, a new PVPer could suddenly find themselves in a "where do I start first?" sort of situation.

Now, call me crazy if you want, but what if there was PVP-XP? And your character had a seperate "level" in PVP, it could go up quite quickly to avoid horrid grind, but your VA would start PVP at Lieutenant level, so you'd dust off your Sabre or your Connie or whatever, and learn the basics first. Then when you had enough PVP XP you'd be able to PVP at Commander, then Captain, and so on and so forth etc. I think this would ease the learning curve a tremendous ammount, it'd be far less overwhelming.

There IS an obvious problem with queues involved, but it's no different to the problems people face whilst leveling anyway, and could in fact serve to improve the low to mid level PVP queues if more people end up queueing up.

I think larger battles would belp too. Solo, noob, and PuGs would not be in direct fire of a premade as often.

Hmm the idea makes a lot of sense. It could even lead to more pvp in the lower level queues. However, the tech very likely requires much more work then cryptic is able to put into it. So not even "soon™".

I like the idea of choosing to be a "fighting lt.cmd 5" with level appropriate ships and skills, as an added bonus.

Despite some rants on the forum defending the right of 600 day veterans pvp-premades to use every broken skill at their disposal to ROFL-stomp PUGs , it harms the game in many ways. I don't have a solution for the problem.
No one denies that skill comes from experience and practice. But the greater the devide between new players and vets becomes the more of a problem this will be. Sepcial XP based on PvP experience at least tries to address the problem.

I totally agree with you on this one. Premades shouldnt be in open queues, it creates an unfair advantage, and it cant be fun for premades to steamroll a pug 15-0. I know its not for me when im in a premade, pugs offer no real challenge really

No it is no fun at all for a premade to fight PuGs without a real challenge, you're right.

Personally I've always casted my vote for seperate Arenas, 1 for PuG's, 1 for Premades. But to be honest with the current state of STO, there arent alot of premades lately. LF being one of them, simply because they only hang out in C&H's, and the crap that they are going through atm. (alot of good players left)

And I've heared other fleets having issues as well lol.

Don't forget there are plenty of 'premades' that are frankly in no condition to fight other premades. I've seen more than one premade team out there that can't beat pugs of even medium level talent.

On the other hand, when premade only queues were suggested before, hardcore PvP players have responded that premade vs. premade matches suck because they just drag on and on and on with neither side getting a quick, decisive win. As long as space PvP is not one-shot kill COD type action, equal skilled teams are going to just wail on each other forever. Most PVP'ers don't actually want equal skilled opponents to play all the time; just opponents who are skilled enough to make them feel like they pwned with their own uber PvP skills, but not so skilled that it takes forever to pwn them.
