Im having the same issues, I have a GTX 580 with the latest drivers and if off or on 8x there is no difference, what gives?

Idali, I can see a small difference between the first and third screenshots, but not much of one.

Make sure your nVidia control panel has AA set to 'application controlled', rather than 'off', 'Enhance'* or 'override'.

* Enhance still seems buggy to me, and I've had numerous PCs and GPUs.

It looks working to me. Its just the nature of the rendering engine STO uses. Regular MSAA doesnt work well with shaders. They need to add FXAA

That second picture seems to be AA x2
Third AA x3
Fourth AA x4.

I dont see AA not working?
I cannot see all the small details though because the pictures are saved in a lossy JPG format, I can see the defects in it. But AA seems to be working fine. Perhaps you are refering to the AA for Transparent objects? You might be able to enable that in the Nvidia Control Center, and if the game 'affects' by it.

I went back into my display settings.

Antialiasing was changed from application controlled to off. By far the silliest mistake I've made.
