All the way at the bottom of this page, are some of the ship names used in Armada II:

I picked Monitor due to some fan-fic I had worked on a few years back, and a WIP book. Monitor just sort of resonated with the character. Anyway, plenty to choose from that would fit well for a Defiant

Well, being an amateur historian, I enjoy using historical names for swards / weaponry. Since the Defiant is for all purposes a war ship, I find these to be the most fitting. Iíd post mine, but I get annoyed when I see 3 Ė 4 D-Rís running a similar name during an instance.

My first D-R name was Gladius followed by second - Maniple. I started seeing both names a lot so I switched to a new name, which is a little more esoteric.

I recommend doing some research if you donít like seeing a bunch of ships named the same as yours. However, that doesnít stop anyone from seeing you fly by and liking your name; then taking it for their own.

Latin names can be useful, I like to use Latin names for my ships - Medicus - Healer, Ferrum - Sword, Legati - Legacy and others.

Some names that come to mind with about the same feel as Defiant.
  • USS Vengeance
  • USS Audacious
  • USS Daring
  • USS Resolve
I would say Reliant, but I stay away from well know Star Trek ship names. Swords names are good and the names of famous war battles can sometimes work. If all else fails I start looking up the names of gods or mythological characters. There is a good variety of war god names from various cultures.

All of my escorts are named after bladed weapons. Although I was thinking about and all cannon Defiant-R build and renaming it after a howitzer, but the latest type of howitzer in use is the M777 and AFAIK there is no cool nickname for it.

edit to add:

This +1

If I can't think of a name for a ship I often resort to the old thesaurus...

Defiant...

Audacious
Brazen
Raucous
Wayward

Just a few I thought sounded good.
