Firstly, watch this. Now, if you still want to engage the borg, then read on...

More info. not fitting here can be found in the reply HERE.

Red Alert Chat Channels

Right click on your chat window frame, go to the Channels tab and join the following two channels:
  • REDALERT - Public
    • This channel is only for On Topic chat. Users are advised not to chat about any topic other than that of the Borg Invasion.
    • The channel was created specifically for this as well as to inform other players where the Red Alert button pops up.
    • It is getting close to breaching 3000 account subscribers!
    • More information can be found here.
  • privRA - Private
    • This is a private channel that is to be strictly used only for calling out RAs. Chatting is not advisable, please review the channel information for rules and how to get an invite sent to you.
  • Red Alert - Public
    • This one is a relaxed channel adopted by players as an unofficial, Off-Topic Red Alert channel. It often has discussions pertaining to Off Topic content, be advised.
    • This channel was created a month before Red Alerts came out, so was not intended for this use.
    • This one has a over 1000 accounts subscribed to it.
    • Note: This channel may be merged with REDALERT. Link.
    • This channel is not moderated. If you have an issue with a user here, either Ignore them or file a GM Ticket about the issue, or both.
  • Accolades - Public
    • This channel is used in helping players coordinate and assist each other in learning about and accomplishing in-game Accolades.
    • This includes, but is not limited to, the Borg Invasion Accolades!

When announcing a Red Alert in Chat, make sure you do two things first:
  1. Make a note of what Instance you're in.
    • Each instance has a random chance to get an RA every hour.
    • Some do, some do not. It is Random, hourly.
  2. Make sure you enter it first before declaring it.
    • Many times it will have been completed already and be "empty" or be a "failure."
    • Announcing "bad" ones does no good.
So, when you announce a Red Alert, include the Sector Block (not sector) and the zone number you were in.

Good Examples:
  1. RA Sirius 5!
  2. Alpha Tri 2, RA!
Bad examples:
  1. Vulcan Sector RA!
  2. Celes RA!
How to tell what Zone you are in:
  • You can only tell BEFORE you warp into the Red Alert!
    • If you look afterwards, you'll just see what Red Alert Instance/Zone you are in, which is of no use.
  • Look at your Mini-Map's title (the bar on top of the mini-map) and it should say what Sector you are in.
    • Note: this is NOT the SECTOR BLOCK.
    • To the right of the Sector name there, will be a Number. This number is the Instance Number (aka Zone) you are in.
    • If the number is cut off and not displayed, then hover your mouse over the Sector Name and it should display it in a pop-up tool-tip.
  • To tell what Sector Block you are in, open your Map and go to the Galaxy Map section.
    • You should be able to tell what Sector Block you are in that way, by looking for your player icon.
    • Note: Each sector Block usually comprises of 3-4 Sectors.
      • Example: Vulcan and Risa are two of the three Sectors in the Sirius Sector Block.
  • To change Zones/Instances, simply left click once on the Sector Name Bar and a little context menu will appear with an option to change zones/instance.
    • Clicking that will open a menu gump with any available instances to switch to.
    • Double left clicking one of the choices will move you to that zone/instance.
    • If there are no other instances/zones available, you will be shown a window gump message stating such.

FIGHTING THE BORG TIPS

How to get into a Red Alert:
  • All you have to do is figure out which Sector Block and which Zone(s) in that Sector Block are being Invaded.
    • Using the above two custom channels is perfect for this!
    • Once you're in a Zone that is being Invaded, look at your "Low Priority Interaction" display (the section that has the "Disable Astrometrics" option) for a BIG RED BAR that says RED ALERT!
    • Click that Red Alert bar and you will be prompted by a Hail and asked to confirm warp into the Red Alert.
      • Once inside, you should immediately see borg vessels everywhere and hear them commanding you to lower your shields and escort them to your home-world.
      • Resist!!!!
      • If you see no borg, then the battle is over and you are in an "Empty Red Alert" that will be closed down. Sorry, you got there too late!
  • You have exactly 420 seconds (7 minutes), from when the Red Alert starts in a Sector Block, to get there before they close down to new players and the Red Alert bar disappears.
Form a Team!
  • When you first warp into a Red Alert, form into a Team!
    • Seriously!!! This makes it much easier for us Science and Engineers to see you need healing!
    • This also will help you gain more accolade kills.
  • Other player's "Mission Difficulty" setting has no bearing on Deep Space Encounters, which is what these Red Alerts are.
    • Their difficulty does not change just because someone entered it on Elite first. That is a common misconception.
  • Federation and KDF players cannot team together. Please do not hold that against them and vice versa. (I will heal you, Honorable KDF Warriors!)
How to kill the boss:
  • Take out those Regeneration Probes STAT!
    • These should be the first things your team kills.
    • Once dead, lay waste unto the boss, but make sure you also fire at their plasma blast as it will disintegrate any ship it hits.
    • When the Regeneration Probes spawn again, kill them STAT.
    • Leaving even one of these Regeneration Probes can often lead to loosing the battle.
  • When you are not taking out the Regeneration Probes and the Plasma Blasts (or Tractor Probes if needed), make sure you concentrate all your fire on one side of the ship. Spreading your team out will make the battle take much longer and give the Boss more chances to launch more probes! Focus all your fire on one shield! (Thanks Rev!)
Loot Drops:
  • No, unfortunately, the Borg in Red Alerts are stingy and do not drop loot when you kill them.

Red Alert Sectors

The following are the Sector Blocks with Red Alerts:
  • Level 45 Difficulty: (Players are scaled up to AND down to level 45)
    • Iota Pavonis
    • Alpha Centauri
    • Sirius (KDF cannot enter this Sector Block yet, until the Marauder system)
    • Regulus
    • Psi Velorum
    • Pi Canis
    • Omega Leonis (Feds need Diplomatic Immunity to enter this Sector Block)
    • Beta Ursae
    • Alpha Trianguli
  • Level 51 Difficulty: (Players are scaled up to level 45. No down-scaling.)
    • Zeta Andromedae
  • Level 53 Difficulty: (Players are scaled up to level 45. No down-scaling.)
    • Orellius
Also, keep in mind that there are 3 Sector Blocks that do not have Red Alerts happening in them.
  • Sector Blocks without Red Alerts:
    • Eta Eridani
    • Gamma Orionis
    • Pelia
As well, the explore cluster/nebulae do not spawn Red Alerts either.

Accolades:
  • There are 12 "Veteran" accolades.
    • One for defeating an RA in each Sector Block and a 12th one for defeating them all.
  • There are 11 "Nemesis" Accolades.
    • One for each of the 10 named bosses and an 11th for beating all of them.
      • Killing all 10 Bosses rewards title of, "This Far, No Further."
  • There are 12 "Defender" Kill X-Amount of Borg Accolades.
    • One for each Sector Block and a 12th one for killing 2000 Borg total.
There may be other hidden accolades, I do not know. You can find your accolade progress in your Journal, on the Accolades page in game. They are listed under the Events section there.

Daily Quests:
  • Each zone has a daily quest when you first enter a Red Alert in that zone for that time period.
    • This rewards you with a choice of either a "Level Appropriate Item" or "Level Appropriate Badge."
  • There is one daily quest to do any Red Alert which appears when you first enter a Red Alert for time period.
    • This reward is a single, 15-minute 20% Experience Bonus item that is Bind on Pickup and Unique.
    • You cannot turn in this daily quest if you still have one of these xp bonus items in your inventory or bank.
    • You do not need to complete the RA to turn it in. It is a daily freebie!

Below are some quotes and links for reference that do not fit in the original thread (nearing max characters).
  • KDF Players, get yourself a Diplomatic Immunity Buff!
    • KDF Players in T1-4 ships, be sure to get a Diplomatic Immunity Buff from Federation Envoys and Ambassadors.
      • Even though it doesn't grant you access to Sirius, you will still benefit from the Warp Boost it gives!
Possible reasons why an RA Instance appears Empty/Fail when you warp in:

  • The 7 minute timer is up to enter it but for some reason you were able to click Red Alert before it should have disappeared.
  • One of the RA Instances in that Sector Block Instance has been completed before the others.
  • One of the RA Instances in that Sector Block Instance has failed before the others.
  • Everyone in one of the RA Instances in that Sector Block Instance warped out, auto-failing it.
  • Someone in one of the RA Instances in that sector Block Instance is not warping out of the finished RA they were in, effectively holding up the reset until it hard resets.
A fix for this "annoyance" would be to not have the Red Alert button re-appear once the RA's in that sector have passed the 7 minute mark and especially not after they have been won or lost.
Props to Darren_Kitlor for the following quote with some great tips for Science Ship Players. Some of these tips can apply to any ship and class though. Edited only punctuation and formatting. Cheers!

  • Tyken's Rift
    • Is invaluable for draining power levels on both Regen Probes and the Command Ship.
    • The Borg command ships appear to have their probe launch rates affected by Auxilliary power levels--so tyken's should affects the spawn rate.
  • Target Subsystems
    • Can be very useful--either for dropping the shields or for targeting auxiliary (see above notes).
    • Use it--it's a freebie on science ships.
  • Viral Matrix
    • Is also great for disrupting powers and temporarily bringing down systems.
    • It can give you those precious seconds to put a dent in the ship.
  • Batteries
    • Are always useful but science vessels should have Aux batteries or Weapons batteries, depending on power levels.
    • The Subspace Field Modulator (from Devidian series) also grants significant damage resistance to plasma (the Borg encounter doesn't deal proton damage).
  • Team-up!
    • Team buffs are invaluable, especially the end-game team buffs that can help everyone.
    • A VA can use these powers while teamed, aiding low end players to contribute more to the encounter.
    • I can't tell you how many times I've seen groups not teamed and wondering why they're failing.

Probes are weak and when you attack them, they won't move away.

Make sure to have the must have RA Fighting BOFF skills equipped: Hazard Emitters, Polarize Hull and such to have enough healing power.

To refine the tactic I recommend here, stay between 9.5km and 9.85km from the ends of B'ger, no need to move around, then just move backwards out of range to avoid certain doom.

Stay 9.5km+ away, because:
  • Have enough time to see what's coming & react, slowly moving out of range if needed.
  • Weapons will have the arc to fire at all probes & plasma blast without targeting them with cannon: scatter volley or torpedo: spread.

No regen probes = no heal for the command ship and then it doesn't matter if it takes a mintute longer or not.

if that is indeed the plan may i suggest that they get added to gamma orionis and become permanent additions there. from a story line point of view it would suggest that we have pushed the borg back into gamma orionis and more importantly we wont lose any content.
I doubt that they would permanently go away - if anything they might reduce in frequency or be limited to specific sectors (as you suggested)

The Borg are increasing their attacks in Federation and Klingon space and we need you to stop them! Team up with fellow Fed or Klingon players, or work cooperatively with the opposing faction as you push back Borg Deep Space Incursions.

Borg Red Alerts are Fleet Action-type events signaled by distress calls sent out to players of both factions in Sector Space. These events are repeatable and cycle randomly through the different sectors. Players must work together to intercept and destroy the Borg Fleet.

Here are some more details about this latest addition to Star Trek Online:
  • Borg Red Alerts appear randomly in different sectors about once every hour.
  • Click the Red Alert button to be transported to the nearest Red Alert Zone.
  • Captains of any level (post-Tutorial) can participate in Borg Red Alerts!
  • Borg intercepts will generally scale to the appropriate strength and threat level, while some sectors are reserved for challenges more befitting Admirals.
  • Work with fellow Federation and Klingon players on 5-member teams, or go "cross-faction" and take on the Borg Fleet with players of the opposing faction.
  • Your team will have 15 minutes to defeat the powerful Borg Fleet. If you succeed and defeat a set number of Borg in the allotted time, an even more challenging Borg Boss will appear!
  • Red Alert Zones offer special Accolades and increased XP and players can receive one free XP boost each day to assist you in pushing back the Borg Invasion!

Heed the call and play Borg Red Alerts today!

It really sucked because I didn't have Sci Team (replaced it with Hazard Emitters). I haven't noticed it since that one time but the end fights can get busy so I may have just overlooked it. Unless one of the KDF in the instance hit me with SNB by mistake? Just a heads up.

Also, the Borg are doing antiproton damage. My main has gotten two antiproton damage accolades since the BDSE's went live, and that's all I've been doing with him. I thought the Borg did plasma damage? I guess they only use plasma torpedoes...

And some helpful team hints.
  1. If you're on a pre-made and your team gets split up into different instances, please drop and team with the people in your instance. My Tactical/Engineering/Science Fleet ability doesn't help you if you're not on my team (and yours won't help me).
  2. If you have team invites turned off and you're doing BDSE's, don't expect to get healed.
  3. Unless you're uber, try to stay with the rest of the team. In my experience, at least 75% of the people that think they're uber and can handle 2 cubes 2 spheres and 2 probes on their own, can't.
  4. Use Evasive Maneuvers or Deuterium Surplus to get out of the blast range of a Borg cube. Really, just use it.
  5. If you're a lowbie in a BDSE flying a T2 ship you might want to focus on shooting down the plasma blasts and probes that the command ship spits out, then go back to shooting B'ger when none of those are present. You're not adding a whole lot of damage anyway, and taking care of probes/blasts as they come out is really helpful. And the player death = faster probe spawn theory still has not been disproved.
  6. Plasma blasts > regeneration probes > tractor probes > probes
  7. Crossheal. Please.

Z
It should also be noted that the Marauder system (KDF's Diplomacy System) is also slated form release when the DOff system comes out in 4.1 (slated for sometime after the 22nd of September) which will allow KDF players to enter the Sol System in a way similar to how FEDs can enter Omega Leonis.

Can you please add a note about how to determine which instance you are presently in?
Just like the Area Map does not specify which sector block you are currently in, I have not noticed a reliable/obvious place to see the instance number.

When changing instances, it's possible for me to see #1, #3, and #5 in the list, so I also cannot deduce whether I am currently in #2 or #4 because the system clearly isn't that precise when it creates and flushes them.
Thanks!

Some other general tips:
*Level-appropriate badge (currently, pre-economy overhaul) equates to Marks of Exploration for Captain rank and below, and not a large amount. Certainly not enough to give up Patrol missions.
*If you are just killing time between RAs, the middle of Sirius is normally a good place to chill out both for a central location, and the chance of getting Diplomatic Immunity from generous players passing by. It also (probably?) means more instances and therefore more chance of RAs.
*Again, shoot the Regenerating Probes, eh? I think Cryptic wanted to avoid Crystalline Entitytus for that very reason. :p
*Joining a team is great. Joining a team on Elite difficulty has cost me victory both times it has happened. I'm not doing it again. I don't need those lives on my conscience...

Hello there Captain Zebular,

Can you please edit that information as the channel is only for ON TOPIC chat, users are advised NOT to chat about any topic other than that of the Borg Invasion. The channel was created specifically for this as well as to inform other players where the REDALERT button pops up.

So to be perfectly clear, players using this channel can chat... they are not limited to only posting notices.

Are there any helpful hints on getting your existing team into a Borg Red Alert? Often the people in our fleet are out running dailies as a group when a Red Alert drops and want to go over and smackdown some Borg, but we have yet to get into one instance all together. Changing instances has never gotten us all into the same one; often we are only offered 1 or 2 choices and they are all different (Group Member 1 gets #20 or #22, 2 gets #15 or #18, 3 gets #17, etc.) PUGs are fine, but we want the chance to team.

Updated, thanks for the clarification. I do not know why you couldn't message me in game. I'm going to chalk this up to just having a bad day.

I am not sure about this, I will do some research and look into it. We might need some dev clarification on current teams trying to enter an RA though.
