# 1 Why Go Anti-Proton?
09-05-2011, 10:12 PM
Eng, VA, Fleet Escort. CRF2(x2) HYT2(x2) APOIII.

Iím not seeing a big spike in damage going with Anti-Proton versus Phaser. Iím using purple MK XIís [CRTH][DMG2]. The skill is almost twice as expensive with no big payout (and yes, I am fully specced for AP DHCís).

Can anyone tell me the advantage to these monsters that make them any better than Phasers? Is there any energy weapon that has a big enough impact to warrant not speccing Phaser / Disruptor?

That right there is the big reason that I run all phasers. I ran AP for months, then switched to phasers, and am a lot happier. Some people can make AP work. I didn't. The big thing with AP is you have a higher chance of getting a critical hit. Phasers, you have a chance of taking things offline. Personally, the chance of those things happening is so little, that I just went with phasers because of the cheap skill points. You can try it, but I kill people just as fast with phasers, as I did with AP.
The big thing that you need to understand is that all the different type of weapons are the same, just different. I know that sounds strange, but it is true. They are all different, but are all equal. Phasers have a small chance of taking systems offline, and AP has a small chance of getting a critical hit. Go to the middle of ESD, and look at there weapons there.

The only thing that makes Anti-Proton good are Tactical Officers in Escorts running the Mk X PvP reward versions (7 Marks of Honor each at K7 - OR if they can farm decent purple Mk XI versions with good modifiers) which give them 70% Critical Severity.

AP has double the Crit Severity of any other energy type. Phaser is more preferred since it's cheaper to spec into and its subsystem disable proc goes off far too frequently.

Thanks guys. Just running a sanity check to see if I was missing something. Apparently not.

I'm gonna spec Phasers and see how that goes.

APs don't have a higher change of getting a crit, APs don't have double the crit severity. APS don't have a change to bypass shields.

APs have +20% crit severity, that is all.

Are they worth it?
No, unless you have the tactical skills to boost the crit change up, to make that extra crit severity count.

odn't quote me on this, but i vaguely remember reading something that the devs were planning on changing the weapons so the benefits of the high skill point items have greater benefits and are worthwhile.

So, I respecc'ed.

Went for phasers, and went for D-Beams instead of cannons.

Oh I know, that will be a damage drop. But I was able to shoehorn in a double ship spec, so i can run both Retrofit Cruisers and Fleet Escorts with my build.

I need to pop into an Excelsior from Time to Time, especially during a Borg Invasion.

I wonder what percentage of people take into account the proportions of energy types the other factions use when they fit their ship's armour for PvP?

THIS
Antiproton are the BEST energy weapon type FOR TACTICAL OFFICERS ONLY.
If you are a tac in an escort/Bop/Raptor ,then with AP weapons you have the potential for maximizing DPS
due to the higher crit chance/crit sevirity.
For NON tacs Phasers are probably the BEST choice.Cheap in skillpoint investment with a very distinct and sometimes devastating proc effect.
From my experience Phasers are still "broken" as they proc way too often.
Another good choice for NON tacs are Tetryon weapons.....dont know why but they seem to be hitting harder than disrupters/plasma/polaron.

There is just ONE reason to go with AP weapons:

In pvp a lot of people are using phaser and disruptor weapons, that causes a lot of people to take resistence-consoles AGAINST phaser/Disruptor weapons. Some go for sure and take the aplative armor that hepls against tetyon/plasma too, but, at least a while ago, nobody took consoles against AP and polaron (and I believe ap are the better ones of this 2), so THERE it was usefull to take Ap.

The other benefit (for escorts at least) is that there are far better cannons available for AP then for phasers.

Recently I see more and more ppl using AP so even that strategy doesnt pay of any more. For every other occasion, especially PVE, AP are as good as phasers, the diffrent perk does not have such an impact and the fact that it costs almost the DOUBLE amount of skillpoints make AP a very bad choice.

And if you go for the perk and pure efficiency, take disruptors, for escorts and cruisers the resistance debuff is more usefull then a failing subsystem now and then.
And, like for AP, the available crafting/emblem weapons have better bonuses then phasers. But I couldnt fly a Defaint or Souvereign fireing green weapons.....
