Hi All,

I've been commanding the USS Fairport, Heavy Cruiser, kitted with phasers/2xphotons(crit)/Quantum in front, Transphasic, Plasma Array and Rare Quantums in Rear. I like how it shoots, but its S L O W to turn. Thank G8d for tractor beams.

I am trying to make a good decision for my next ship, since I have a fairly well balanced crew with some tuned more for space, some more for ground. I was actually thinking a hot rod science ship with some nasty weapons on it.

I am open to all ideas.

Thanks

If you primarily PvE it does not really matter which ship you choose. You can mix and match without too much difficulty. I have Tacs in Escorts, Cruisers, and Sciences.

I can tell you that if you think the Heavy Cruiser turns slowly that you are going to be in a huge shock to see how slowly the Exploration Cruisers turn: the Galaxy makes the Dakota seem like an Escort.

I am somewhat fond of the Science Vessels, myself. The Intrepid has good turn rates and just feels nimble. At T4 you do lose that one fore weapons slot, though. You can still do quite well with only 6 weapon slots - and, as I said above, it does not make much of a difference in PvE.

I agree, if you are doing PvE, it doesn't really matter, as any ship will work in PvE. Personally, I would go with the Defiant. You put cannons, a torpedo on that thing, and ships in PvE won't stand a chance. And since you will kill them really quick, you don't need a lot of defenses, which the Defiant doesn't have.

A lot of people just cannot get the hang of Escorts, IME. They try to fly them like they would a Cruiser or Science Vessel and just get blown out of the sky over and over, and that leads to frustration. They expect them to be durable like the other 2 classes are. If you can get the hang of the swoop in, shoot-em-up, and swoop back out thing then Escorts can be awesome, though.

Aye, an escort takes finess and skill to pilot. Science and cruisers are aimed at wearing down your enemy

Escorts are aimed at hitting hard and fast, killing them in the first volley or getting out of harms way for the next run.

If you want the best of both worlds, high hull and good maneuverability, then science ships are for you.
The nebula makes a fine tac sci ship thanks to its universal boff slot

I'm using the Defiant Refit myself and I just maxed out a few days ago. The playstyle for an escort is pretty different then either cruiser or science ship. While really advanced players probably can get Escorts to do all sorts of things, I personally have settled in on selecting a target, unloading everything and quickly getting out(or trying) of the area of engagement before the KDF collapse on me. I completely suck. However, its also a blast of a ship class to fly.

I usually mix up hit and fade and pump the shields and unload techniques with my Dakota.

All I know is that a Galaxy refit with the antimatter spread seems like a pretty good deal. I tend toward having a lot of engineering consoles, but that to enhance turn rate....hmmm....maybe I could retrain my science officers to get some kick butt sensor/systems capability, since I won't need the turn rate enhancers.

So confusing!

More input please!

thanks

I'm biased, because I've only ever flown escorts, but I'd say the Defiant Retrofit is the best option, although you need to know it's limitations.

No other ship in the fed arsenal can do as much damage, in my opinion. Maybe not even in the KDF. In PVP, i'm almost always the top damage dealer.

And if you know what you're doing, and you have the right BOFF skills, you can actually hang in the fight for a while if you need to. You just really need to know when to cut and run, which you eventually will have to do.

But I tell ya, there's nothing more satisfying than dropping out of cloak, and killing a ship within a couple seconds. That's something you rarely get with a cruiser or science ship.

Speaking of which, the cloak is my absolute favorite part of the defiant R. Not only do you get a +15 (percent?) to attack for a few seconds after decloaking, but it lets you choose your battles. Let's you position yourself perfectly before striking. That's somethig you can't do if you don't have a cloak. Now if only it had a battle cloak for when th ings went bad.
