I was using a build calculator and it said Antiprotons needed the star ship phaser weapon skill. Is this true?

That is not true. They should just need either the Beam/Cannons skill (or both depending on your build) and the Admiral-level Antiproton skill. Although you may want to spec into phasers until you reach RA then respec into Antiproton so you kill stuff faster while you level.

I also recommend the Tricobalts. They're sumptuous.

Tricobalts are very situational though and very expensive to skill on.
