Dear Dan Stahl:

Good luck !!!

P.S. Should the Devs retire the Stah tribble now?

Or, like the Zin tribble (named after Craig Zinkievich) which wasn't retired when Craig left yet returned, will the Devs keep the Stah tribble alive and well in hopes that Dan will return someday?

So who is this guy stepping into the vacuum left by Dan's absence? I'm one of the team that worked alongside Craig Zinkievich and Dan Stahl in the original development of the game. As the lead programmer on the game, I helped design and implement nearly every aspect of the game present at launch. After launching the game, I left the team to take over as the CTO of Cryptic Studios as a whole, but I've been working hard to drive STO forward from that seat as well.

Coming back to the STO team this week was like coming home. I put a piece of myself into the making of this game, and it feels so right to be working with the team once again. My tenure as EP will only last until we can identity the right person to drive the game forward, but I promise this won't be a half-hearted effort on my part. I'm wholly invested in finishing off the amazing free-to-play plans that Dan has put into motion, and then delivering more great content and features to you all for the game.

I'll share more about the future of the game soon, but I wanted to jump in and let you all know that there's someone at the helm who loves this game as much as you do.

Stephen D'Angelo
Executive Producer, Star Trek Online
Let me throw out there that I'd love it if, longer term, you guys used this as an opportunity to reorganize. I hope Jesse Heinig applies for the vacancy when the time comes for you to go back to the Foundry, as he has a background as a showrunner for a Star Trek RPG, a good rep with the community and strong storytelling skills. Just don'tlet him leave the content team until it's staffed up!

Also...? When organizing the expanded content team, take a look at these missions Dan is doing with Christine. Back before the game launched, I was pushing for weekly series of episodes with a time sensitive reward. Now, after seeing how that's panned out, I really think there will be some pretty inevitable content gaps there given the high standard that's been set for Featured Episodes.

I think if you get a content slot freed up somewhere, you should get someone working with Kestrel and CBS on what I'd call a Monthly Species Spotlight. Basically, just a hub with some lore missions, short, simple PvE, and maybe PvP built around a species of the week from a Trek series. I think if you kept these simple and separate from FE development, you could have SOME new content to boast every month.

Even if it's as simple as revisiting the Bringloidi (the "Space Irish" from TNG's "Up the Long Ladder") and trying to do something workable with them in the form of a quick lore quest and a repeatable space battle/patrol where the player protects them. It fleshes out the universe and could be good R&D for which species to try and upgrade in features.

Anyway, best of luck to you.

Sorry to see you go, it's the end of a great era.

Still, at least the game will still be with us for a long while yet thanks in no small part to you Dan. No matter what some people may be thinking, thanks to you and the team at Cryptic there's a solid foundation for whoever takes over to build on.

A big thank you for all the kind and honest feedback. This game is where it is today because of loyal and loving fans. It has been a real joy to work on. I've looked forward to every day working on STO. I've been connected to this game 24 hours a day since before launch in the hopes of listening to your feedback and finding ways to learn and improve.

My decision to leave now is really only possible because STO is in good hands. I have every confidence in the STO team, Cryptic Leadership, and Perfect World to carry forward with the vision of making STO into the game it deserves to be. It has already come quite a ways since launch and the support for this game has been phenomenal. There is peace in leaving now because I've seen and been a part of everything that is about to happen to STO. I'm excited for you because you are going to see some major new features in coming weeks that will begin to show some of the awesome work this team has been doing in these last months.

There are no interesting conspiracies here. I've been involved in various parts of the game industry since 1996. In that time I've built awesome community websites, published a board game, shipped the amazing Xbox 360 console, and spent 3 years on this amazing MMO. I've been given the opportunity to start the next chapter in my career that allows me to combine many of my past experiences into something new. It will also allow my family to move into San Francisco where my beautiful Fiancee Kimberly has worked for years. So as I stated in the letter, there is no one to blame but me. It was my decision and one that was not easy as I really can't state enough how awesome it has been to work at Cryptic.

So thank you again for all the kind words. You have been partners in building this game and I really do believe you'll be happy to see all the changes coming soon.
