I always feel torn between the effectiveness of cannons and the canon-ness on beams on the ships (Defiant excluded).

So how gimped is it to use DBBs or BAs on a Saber/Akira/Prommy?

DBB with BO3 is a really nice spike in addition to your cannons.

Akira may actualy favour beams due the lower turn rate compared to other escorts.

But in general cannons serve you better, but beams can be huge fun and put people on the wrong foot Also in PVE anything works, PVP well yeah just get cannons.

PS Mass effect 3 isn't coming soon enough (me WANT)

ok, so how is FAW compared to SV?

i find scatter volley is almost as effective as CR on single ships and devastating on small groups...but thats coz its focused forward

This is strictly PvE.

I have a KDF tac in a raptor with 2 x BAW and torp spread III. Its super fun! In the Borg DSE I can rip down all of their shields with BAW and torp spread just does huge damage.

I also respec out of some ground skills and took cannons so I can run SV and BAW at the same time (haven't tried it yet ). THis also allows me to run all beam or all cannons if I want too.

Was thinking: Raptor with Quantum , 3 x DBB forward and 3 turrets rear

Tac: BAW I, CSV I, Torp Spread III
Tac: BAW I, Torp Spread II, CSV II, (Some Attack patern)

Waste of time? Perhaps.

Ive tried it a few months ago, I was pretty much unsatisfied. There are a lot of reasons a beam escort isnt that great of a choice.

- You have an escort because you want to deal damage, notably you want to deal most damage in your frontal arc, which can only be 100% ultilized if you have turrets on the back as well.
- Your escort has a higher turnrate, so its better to fully utilize them with Dual (heavy) cannons or a mix of cannons/Dual beam bank/Torp. (So using beams on it is kinda wasting your potential)
- You have less options to choose from in terms of Bridge officer skills. You will be able to use Beam Overloads on an all-beam escort, but you will not be able to make use of Rapid Fire etc (i.e. RF3 gives +50% damage to your cannons/turrets for 10 secs) with it.

I personally think that a setup with full cannons/turrets + a Dual beam to make use of Beam overloads is the best way to go. (And you can even add a torp to that if you must)...

You take a massive damage penalty by going beams on an escort. And if you try and mix them you're shooting yourself in the foot because your skill points are spread so thin.

Um why, I donít understand?

For both Beams and Cannons all you needs is and extra 7 points in the tier 2 skill Beams, you already have the rest of the skills you need when you take Cannons anyway. 7 in beams = 1400 skill points out of 52,000+ points, how is this spreading to thin?

I have seen plenty of escorts in Borg DSEís with beams/turrets and they seem to do very well with the FAW / Overload, CRF/CSV and Torp Sread Combo. In fact I saw one little Defiant absolutely rip apart 3 spheres with this, even before I could get my fat butt carrier to the fight.

I personally like beams better because it feels more "trekky".... I don't like Defiant much.

Anyway, cannons are probablly beter because
1) Beam Overload sucks your energy but Cannon Rapid Fire does not.
2) Cannons can do more damage fast (bring down shields better)

Just my thought

I have been experimenting with an all cannon and turret build

One of the only ways I found to also have a decent ground spec

DHCs and turrets is pretty much the only way to go for escorts in PvP. I've seen a few beam boat escorts in PuGs but everyone seems to laugh at them b/c they don't do enough damage. I believe the general opinion is escorts = cannons, cruisers = beams... and very rarely do you mix the two.
