It's weird, because from what I have read in dev posts and blogs concerning dilithium and ship purchase at level up, you are supposed to get enough dilithium at promotion to purchase your next ship.
But from what I have heard from pretty much day one is that that is simply not the case. And that unfortunately, not all methods of earning dilithium are currently in-game.
Something sounds bugged somewhere.

Another thought is that you are unable to try a different ship. If you don't like your ship, you have a lovely discharge option that nets you nothing. one of the awesome things about the game has been to be able to try different ships and builds as you level.

That is pretty much impossible now.

I wonder if regular missions are supposed to reward dilithium or if there is supposed to be an exchange vendor for it that we haven't found.

I do not Know why people are surprised.

Just go and play ant Perfect World F2P game and you will find the exact same thing - Its great to a point - then it costs to do anything and it is made so you must buy equipment/buffs/potions etc. to be able to compete or even just play.

So really no surprises here,

just sit back and watch the game nosedive into oblivion,

F2P will not work in STO as it does in a fantasy game.

I think we should get the correct amount of dilithium to buy a ship but the whole thing is not here yet so im not going to panic until i see what they do with it.

if this is not fixed before launch it will fail, Star Trek gamers will not put up with this for long and there will be no long term commitment from the gaming community with a model like this.

I like the concept of Dilithium, but seriously 20,000 for a freaking consol?!?

either make things cheaper and give us enough dilithium at lvl up to get the ship we should be in, or just bring back ship tokens, and make it so we can purchase other ships if we like, cuz that is why we play, its to pilot a STAR SHIP!

this should take first priority, or we are all in for an epic FAIL!

The way I see this going, and it was the suggestion of almost every player that heard me shouting bloody murder over zone chat last night... "Just save up your dilithium and SKIP the commander level ship, and use it all for your Captain ship".

So essentially, all this really does, is take a CHUNK of the game and forced people to use a workaround in order to AVOID paying for this ship. Goes to show you how much people dislike grinding... LOL

It's just like Guildwars... once they put a shortcut in the game through the mountains... people pretty much just stopped going through the long way. I mean spend another 4-6 hours in an unessissary part of the game, or just pool a few thousand gold with a few other low level characters and have a 'runner' take you to the GOOD part of the game in 8-10 minutes!!

Why would anyone decide to grind the dilithium for their cmdr lvl ship... only to finally get it at cmdr 7 and have to turn around and do it again at captain!?!

Even if they DO give you a little bit of Dilithium for EVERY mission you do up to that point, and even if you get enough to buy your ship at cmdr 1, do you REALLY think anyone would be stupid enough to SPEND any of their dilithium on things like CONSOLES, or anything else for that matter?

I really TRULY hope this changes, or else Commander level will just be a pain in the butt for me from now on.

Well I just hit VA-1 and despite skipping the tier 3 ship Im almost 100,000 Dilithium short for the tier 5 ship.. No Fleet Escort for me during the test. *Sad Kitty* Several of my fleetys are about to hit the same problem and we are planning to try out the revamped STFs. It wouldnt be too much harder to use the tire 4 ships but I would like to run them in the Tier 5. ^^;

When it goes live though and the exstra XP is taken out, Im thinking there will be enough missions providing Dilithium that by the time we get to the next rank well have enough to buy the ship.

As an idea to Cryptic, what about side quests within main missions that give an extra Dilithium reward?

You know I've lost count on how may threads there are about this subject but from what I've read almost every one involved is irritated about the short changing of dilithium and I'm right there with you all.

I don't mind grinding out the residual dilithium but I hope it is like some have said in that missions and etc will give amounts of dilithium to compensate for what you do not get from leveling up, and not like the daily emblem grind.

For those who have made it all the way to VA if any, would it be a good idea to stick with the Capt level ship till RA-UH or VA?

I'm almost to RA-LH and I'm well beyond the level range in the quest series so I'm thinking I could do it as long as the mob's don't level match, I'm a long way off from the Captain level missions thanks to Red Alerts and Terran Empire events.

All the enemies level mach now.

For the ship, if you get the Captain level one you wont be able to get the Admiral one (at least not without considerable time and grinding) I think the best way to do it is to skip the tier 2 and 4 ships to be able to get the tier 5.

All enemy levels match in story episodes and star cluster explores. Patrols and normal DSE's are still at their original levels.
