# 1 Patrols/space combat
10-07-2011, 07:54 AM
I started playing thru again and had a thought about some of the space combat missions. when i jumped into some of the sectors and started fighting the patrols...why dont they signal each other for backup? wouldnt make more sense since they are all in the same sector? add some spice to it and give the feeling of the dangers in space. i guess for me it was getting a little dull just fly to points A thru E.. blow them up.. jump out and head to the next patrol. now i know i can increase the difficulty..and i have. but the results are pretty much the same.

am i the only one that feels like this?

I'd love that, and once they all converge...scramble sensors and watch them blow each other to hell...ha ha

I think the way space combat missions work need an overhaul. I don't do patrol missions at all, since while I'm doing exploration missions I get those anyway. And It's really dull to have 6 indepndent ships or battlegroup in one sector with no interest in the other's fate. It's also dull to have super-heavy warships be the last enemy squad which you can blast out of existence with no problems at all.

1: When entering a sector, all hostile forces should notice you. This, however, shouldn't lead to simply having all mobs ganging up on you. An NPC battlegroup really should have some purpose - it should consist of different ships regarding their missions. Escorts protecting science vessels and so on. They mabe spread out once you enter, but the moment you attack (and for example don't scramble their comms) they call for help and the others could join - science could assist their cruisers, escorts trying to flank you etc.

2: When confronting a super-heavy capital ship you should at least feel some kind of respect. If you encounter a Negh'var, you shouldn't be able to prevail without a scratch. Unless you fly a heavy cruiser or battleship you shouldn't be able to even engage those ships without support. For example if you fly an escort you are an ESCORT. No one man army, you provide firing support while you cruisers take the flak. Perhaps you could call in NPC reinforcements if no other players are around or you want to play solo. I think an ability to call in a peregrine attack wing for example would be nice or a "distress call" skill to call the nearest allied vessel (player or NPC).

Eh... one Defiant or BoP shouldn't be able to take a Galaxy, Sovereign, Dreadnought, Star Cruiser, etc... but I see it all the time. It really should take concentrated fire from a number of ships to make a big cruiser pop. But, since most PvE missions are designed to be done solo, NPC ships had to be gimped in order for the mission to be completable.

That's what I meant. In the very first Klingon missions I trashed so many heavy cruisers with my B'rel, as well as the tutorial on fed side where you trash multiple Borg ships (yes they were regenerating, but still...). And a mission later you already battle a handfull Negh'Var Warships which off course don't offer any singificant resistance to a 300-years-old light cruiser (okay, a refit. But still...)

The "Fleet Support" skill of the VAs is pretty much useless. And it's only one ship arriving as reinforcements, so there is no "Admiral feeling" here as well. I'd suggest trashing the skill and allowing players to call in reinforcements any time (with long cooldowns) via a "Distress Call" skill which get's stronger the more you advance in rank. Alternatively, you could send out distress calls to nearby players. Imagine you click the ability, the first ten seconds after that a pop-up to nearby players calls for their assistance. If no one reacts the NPC support warps in. As a Lt you get another light Cruiser, as a Lt. Cd. two light cruisers or a science vessel, as a Cmdr. a cruiser and science or four light etc.

Or it could depend on what you're flying. A cruiser would get escort support whereas the escort could get a cruiser tanking for them.

PvE space combat has always bothered me in STO. You solo 3 ships at a time repeatedly when according to canon/lore even one of those ships should kick your butt. You can crank up the difficulty in STO but it's not the same.

Instead of 3 ships I'd prefer you just fought one ship but it was tougher. And I wish they'd call for help like the OP suggested. Then PvE would be a bit more interesting.

Currently the experience is pure grind, pure repetition, and I really don't enjoy the missions.

I think the idea of a "distress call" is pretty cool. I've thought about that, too. Even if it's just calling people off your friends list, it'd be a neat feature. (Though, really, signalling ANY nearby ship would be more realistic.)

Maybe they could do it like the current Borg Red Alerts, have a box pop up in your HUD, "so-and-so requesting assistance." Though, I imagine they'd have to work on that old problem of different ships having trouble arriving in the same instance. (Played with a friend a few weeks ago, and learned the hard way that it's still an issue!)

I wish the Devs would take Kirkfats idea of using very popular Foundry missions as random missions for different sectors.
You enter a sector and get the pop-ups and can decide to iether ignore or pursue them at you leasure.
The current Foundry daily doesn not seem to work very well or push people to use the foundry for more than quick emblem grinding on shoot/kill/done style missions.
