# 1 Neck of Excelsior
10-09-2011, 07:28 AM
Something has been bothering me for months about the look of the Excelsior. Then I realised today that the problem is that the neck of the ship should be the same width as the impulse engines on the saucer. The neck isn't wide enough and it hinders the look of the ship from having that iconic Excelsior look of being a bulky starship.

Please fix!

You are right, and I did bring this up shortly after the Excelsior was released. Also notice how the in game Excelsiors neck actually curves inwards towards the top, it should be straight lines.

I noticed that too Morgomir!

I also think that the hull should be a bit wider (both horizontally and vertically).

The Excelsior is so iconic and I find as small as these flaws are, they actually make the ship appear more different than it should. Sometimes I don't feel like I'm playing an Excelsior because from some angles, it doesn't look completely like one.

Also, if you look you can see theres not supposed to be windows on the grey layer of the bridge cake. And it shouldnt be so thick either. The layers of the bridge need to be lowered a bit...but particularly the grey part. and then move the windows up one level but only put a few on there. And the refit secondary impulse engines are too thick in game, they need to be a tad thinner when viewed from the side. And on the Original ship, there is no single row of windows below the torpedo launchers, those are only on the refit.

I think the Excelsior would look amazing if it had access to the type 6 or new white Venture/Enterprise F style skin. The Excelsior is supposed to be a very light color, with the light blues...currently impossible to accurately do in game...I am dieing to see this skin on the Excelsior.

The biggest and most glaring issue to me, is obviously the neck...but I would love to see the devs give the Excelsior a final polish, its so close but a few things mentioned in this thread just throw the ship off a bit.

edit:

I made some images to help explain some parts.

And...the texture on the shuttlebay makes no sense, the lines going horizontally...I would suggest just popping a different texture there to fix the issue.

Morgomir, you read my mind...I've been dying for the Venture skin to make its way to other ships to so I can use it on the Excelsior.

It would also be nice if they gave us the ability to change the colour of the windows. While skin 1 of the windows are accurate shape, the Excelsiors windows were more of a whitish blue and not yellow.

Yeah, and you know whenever something like this gets enough support it gets fixed. Same happened with the Luna class and Sovereign some time ago. The Excelsior is a beautiful design that deserves to be as accurate as possible.

All the canon ships should look as accurate as possible to there counterparts to make it feel more like star trek. I said this once I'll say it again.

But unfortuneatly for the canon ships... the devs are caught up in making new ships, and they have to prioritize which canon ships to fix up and which to schedule for later. The more people that support something being fixed, the more likely it is that Capnlogan or another ship artist will take notice and do something about it.
