I was wondering if there were any plans to allow people to pay for a subscription using C-Points?

I am aware of the upcoming C-Points for DL exchange. Like Eve this may allow people to pay for a subscription via gathering DL in-game.

Does anyone else think paying for a subscription using C-Points in the future is a good idea? Or not?

I think until they get this current mess sorted out, that would be a bad idea to implement. However, if they are able to get the economy to a place that both Cryptic and the players are satisfied with, I think that this idea would be worth discussing.

with the new trading system this would be pretty nice.

earn lots of dilithium in game, trade for c-points, buy monthly sub using those c-points, use sub time to earn dilithium for next month, rinse and repeat. you never have to pay a penny but still get a gold account by playing the game.

its not that different to just being a silver account, except you are earning your gold rewards. while you're in game you might find you want that new ship or costume you want as well.

you could also buy smaller blocks of time with c-points instead of a month. perhaps 15 days at a time?

it all seems to fit into the f2p thinking and your using c-points already and for cryptic that would be the first step in getting you to buy extra points for stuff in the store while your playing.

i think that could really work.

1) How does this actually benefit Cryptic/PW? That is the most important question. How would this make them more money than what they already plan on doing?

2) Considering the fact that gold is hardly better than silver, why would you spend what would probably be a large sum of dillithium to purchase enough C-points to buy what would only be very minor account upgrades?

Would be nice to have, but would be nicer to have a reason to play on a gold account.
The current matrix makes it a wiser investment to spend those c-points on inventory space etc., to get a "permenant gold equivalent" on a silver account.

Thats a great point. In LOTRO, for example, there are certain gameplay features you can ONLY play with a sub account, like monster play. STO has no such features. So why would someone spend C-points on minor account upgrades for only one month when they could spend those same C-points on buying the individual account upgrades in the C-store(like more character of Boff or ship slots) and have them forever?

  • They won't have them forever. They'll have them for one month at a time.
  • Someone still has to pay for it. Probably at a less efficient rate than buying a subscription directly. With PLEX, for example, Eve charges $35 for the tradeable two-month game time card.

Since their only real focus is driving C-store sales anyway, they may as well do it.
