I know this is being discussed elsewhere, but I would really like to get as much community attention on this idea as possible as it solves the VA token issue:
31 days = free VA token
To explain, VA ships costs 2k CP(c-points). 2k CP costs $25. They dont want people subscribing for just 1 month($15) to get the free VA token and then canceling, because that would give you a $10 cheaper way to get a VA ship when you got to that rank.
However, if someone is subscribed for 2 months that = $30, meaning Cryptic gets the $25 they would normally get for buying 2k CP and an extra $5. However, a person wouldnt actually have to wait 2 full months before they got their VA token, they would only need to wait until they were billed the 2nd time.
You are billed every 30 days, so that means after 31 days as a gold member you would qualify for your free VA token. And like any other ship token, this would apply on all characters as long as you are gold. How does this sound?
PS: This is not "my" idea, it is just what I am supporting as the simplest way to give both the players and Cryptic what they want.
You forget the 800 C-points he/she will get from the 2 month subscription in addition to the free ship.
You also get ship tokens at every rank except VA in addition to your monthly stipend, so that is no different at VA except you just dont get the token. Per D'Angelo, the only reason they didnt give a token at VA is they didnt want people gaming the system:
As for why we are not keeping the free ship at Vice Admiral to Gold players, this is primarily because it creates an "exploit" where a Silver player could subscribe immediately before ranking up to get the ship, then cancel. This doesn't make the accountant types very happy.
I know he also said he didnt want to penalize people to get to VA quickly back making them wait, although the majority of gamers are fairly casual and will not likely reach VA in 31 says, so that isnt really an issue here.
An easy way to handle this would be to tie this into the Veteran Rewards system, either as a 32 to 50 day Veteran reward or lump it in with the 100 day or something. 32 to 50 would insure that the person can't get it from paying for just 1 month as some months are 31 days long. 50 would also keep it to 2 months as months are at least 28 days so two months will always be over 50 days.
20$ - 25$ = -5$ that Cryptic loses out of that deal.
Please go back and read D'Angelo's comments I quoted in my last post. He did not say anything about the monthly stipend being an issue with the VA token, but rather people subbing for just one month and then canceling.
If 31 days isn't profitable enough for cryptic, 61 days, or even in the 100 days. I don't think it'd cause too much of a fuss for current subscribers.
But for new F2P players gone gold? Maybe we could have multiple ways of triggering the VA token. E.g. If I sub to a 3+ month billing period, maybe I shouldn't have to wait for 100 days to be able to claim a VA ship.
I don't follow this argument players who are serious will not be satisfied by 1 VA ship. Also the
Model doesn't depend on that occurring. Bleeding edge will depend on +1 ships bought for specific abilities, then moved up to higher tiers, however even that isn't the real profit source I expect. The business model is enough silver players deciding they want a couple things from the C-Store every couple month when they check back into the game. The goal has to be throw stuff up and see what folks like. Make enough CCGs and sooner or later you get a MTG.
A million silver users each spending 10 bucks a month isn't bad business.
