I have tried to use the escorts, there fun but just not me. Too small, more like bad *** fighters than big capital ships. I am almost 44 so a big fan of some of the older designs, the connie, the excelsior, the D7/ K'tingas, etc. I am settling in on the excelsior refit at VA and am trying to build up some gear, weapons, etc.
I have it set up like this, I am sure its a bad set up, but thats why im here on the forums, also, I have only a few blues, so I went with what I had. I would like to build a cannon / turret boat but by my other threads it seems it would just be gimped.
I have 2 tetryon cannons, 1 tetryon DBB, 1 transphasic fore
I have 3 phaser turrets, 1 harpeng torp aft.
I dont want to mix weapon types, ie phaser, tetryon but its what i had. I liked the hirogen setups with tetryon/transphasic but i am open to other, more effective setups.
i have these boff skills
bo, torp spread, cannon rf
eng team, eps, rsp, aceton field, eject plasma, ep engines
sci team, tractor repulse
There's no shame in "using what you got". Just know that in a pinch, can replay the featured series for a lot of gear that isn't toonshabby and can get you by until you get better drops or can save up some ECs to get some better gear.
Well, you obviously know that mixing types isn't optimal, so I won't belabor that. I have an alt that runs a turret/cannon excelsior and it can be fun. 3 single canons in front and 3 turrets in back. He has a Hargh' Peng in front and the Rapid Reload transphasic in back. Does he push out as much DPS as my other VA that has pupmphaser arrays, quantums, etc...no. BUT - you can still have a fun, effective build for not a lot of dough.
For now, since our kinda feeling it out, purchase some white MK XI turrets and cannons and see how they "feel" I suggest these because you can always re-sell thim without too much risk, and they are usually pretty cheap.
If you are stuck on doing a turret boat, consider this for your tac boff layout:
Ditch the cannons and turrets... 2xDBB, 1x Array and 1x Torp up front. 3x Array and 1x Torp in the rear. Beam Overload III is your friend.
I'm not totally sold on beam arrays in the front of cruisers (that can turn well enough to use dual beam banks) . I am happy to give up the ten degrees on each side of the front arc and the extra broadside weapon for the increased damage in the front 90 .
