according to stormshade in the latest interview. you can level a toon from 0 to end in two days with a six pack of redbull. I guess we need to watch and see where he is doing this at so we can all be pro.

Seriously these are all great suggestions, especially if you want the merits so you can train your bridge officers etc, but the absolute fastest way to level without running around and doing any work?

Easy. Look for a mission on the foundry called "blast test dummy", set your difficulty level to medium (max is hard to get a chain reaction going) and be be prepared for lots of ship injuries. Takes no skill, but I levelled from Ensign to VA in one day. You usually get at least 1-1.5 LEVELS per run through. (Not ranks)

Heh I'll give that a try - can't quite get all the ships to blow up.

You mean you got some ships to blow up but it still says testing phase one? I don't know how the guy made it, but it seems theres one particual ship that has to blow up, sometimes you get super unlucky and its the one that didn't blow up in the explosion.

If you are having trouble just do it on normal difficulty. Although the exp you get is less, it is still quicker than any of suggestions here.

Edit - I misread. There is a console behind the girl you talk to. You have to go there.

It's not super fast, but it works. Sometimes need 10-15 deaths to start the chain... Heh.

Some might see it as an exploit:

Do it at your own risk but have fun nonetheless. It's been told that record time from char generation to VA1 is around 1h30m. But you need 5 guys on elite and specific missions for that.

BTW I don't get the "use an Escort" advice. Every time I hit a new tier, I fit out an Escort (AND RESPEC into Escorts) and try em out... They're paper. I just get blown up too easily. I love science wessels - a little more durability plus the science powers (VM3, etc) are loads of fun.

Basic hints:
1. Shields and Hull
- Cycle emergency Power to shields 1 & 2
- Use transfer shield strenght
- Distribute shields
- Use skills, that not only heal but also give you resistence (Aux2Sif, Hazard Emitters). Eng and Sci team are
one time heals only.
- use keybinds
2. Weapon power
- Use 100/50/25/25 as your basic setting
3. Max damage potential
- use dual heavy cannons, turrets w/ scatter volley, torps w/spread
- never ever use mines
- stick with one energy weapon type. Don't use a rainbow build. Not Phasers and Tachyon. Just Phasers.
4. Don't overshoot targets
- slow down and keep them in your front arc. But keep moving. It adds to your defence. A standing target is a dead target.
5. Avoid skills that suck
- Energy syphon, Jam Sensors, Emergency Power to Aux, Dispersal Patterns, Boarding party just to name a view
6. Use skillpoints wisely for max potential
- 7 Energy Weapons, 7 Cannons, 7 Beams, 9 Phasers is all you need. Add 7/7/9 for quantums if you need them
7. Don't bother with ground skills
- Ground combat is so easy, you don't need skillspoints in it at all.
- Use 4 Engineers with Shield Recharge, Turret 1, Turret 2 and later on Turret 3. Equip them with Miniguns and use Split beam rifles yourself for exploit damage.
