# 1 F2P - prepare yourself!
10-25-2011, 09:01 AM
What to do before F2P release:

- Delta Flyer
if you do not have the Delta Flyer yet, last chance, get it now while you still can,
the Delta Flyer Crafting Quest will be REMOVED with F2P and the C-Store will be the only way to get it.
If you don't know how to get it: you need to have a few points in your general research skill (that means you need to craft a few items), then the Quest will pop up in your mission contacts,
you will then need to do 10 days of flying around in a Shuttle to scan 12/12 anomalies.
It's easy enough, get it done!

- Tier 3 Excelsior and Nebula Class
buy them NOW, the Ships will only be available through the C-Store
if you buy them now for Energy Credits you get to keep them!
more importantly, their Special Abilities are changed into Consoles (just like all the other Tier x.5 Ships).
So get those 2 Ships NOW for EC while you can, you can discard the Ships after F2P and keep the Consoles in you Bank or put them on your Tier 5 Ship, that is up to you. But who is going to say no to a *free* Transwarp Console?

//update
there was a Dev post that said if you BOUGHT the Tier 5 Excelsior or Nebula before the F2P change you will get both the Tier 5 + 3 unlocked in the C-Store!
So the above only still applies if you did not buy the Tier 5 but unlocked them with Emblems.

- VA1 Tokens
VA1 Tokens are going to be removed (might still change, sdAngelo said they would do "some more thinking" about it... well i wouldn't count on it).
If you have unspent VA1 Tokens, get your Retrofit Ship NOW or those tokens may very well go to waste.
If you have chars below VA1? Well, time to grind up and get those Tokens while you still can, or your Endgame Retrofit will cost you 1600 C-Points.

- Emblems
it is pretty clear by now that Emblems are loosing a lot of worth in the conversion process! (in the real world they would call this "inflation").
yes you may get a bit of dilithium for your old Marks and Badges, but if you have lots of Emblems you will still loose buying power.
So make sure to buy what you need NOW. //news update: this just in: consoles get changed pretty severely with the new skill revamp, you might hold off of those or check what happens to them on the tribble server before you buy

If you have nothing left to buy, think about what your next ALT might need and buy him some gear + bank it / mail it to yourself... or put it on the Exchange or your Fleetbank if you are that kind of nice person ;P

If there is nothing at all that you need anymore, well, then i guess you can wait and see if that dilithium will get you any C-Points on the player driven exchange.

- Crafting
if you have not crafted yet, it's time to start RIGHT NOW!
Grind your crafting up ASAP, there will be dilithium cost attached to many items (all the good ones anyway), so if you have not crafted yet, make sure to get that Crafting Skill up, or soon it will cost you a bunch of dilithium just for leveling the number up (with low level items that you don't need anyway!).
And this goes for ALL your Chars, since dilithium cost will apply to all Chars and you can not trade dilithium.
The Times of sending your anomalies to your Fleetcrafter are OVER.
The Times of mailing your anomalies to your own main Crafter are OVER!
Now every char needs to be a Crafter for himself.

If you already have maxed your crafting skill, make sure to craft what you can NOW, they are adding the time gated dilithium grind to crafting so it is better to get the items while the old rules still apply.

- Ships
The *free* Tier 5 Ships will soon cost a lot of dilithium, right now they only cost you Energy Credits!
In the Skilltree Revamp (soonTM) they want to make it easier to switch between Ships and Weapon Types without the need for a Respec (we will see how this turns out).
If you care to have multiple Endgame Ships, buy them NOW while they only cost you EC.

...and now go back to the above points about Emblems and Crafitng, maybe you want to put some proper gear on those Ships too?

- C-Store
you want to BUY any of the C-Store Ships?
if you want to buy any of the Tier 1 Ships, better wait till after F2P, they are going to get a lot cheaper!
But thats about it, if you want to buy anything else you better prepare to buy now, many of the Ships will rise in price.
I will not tell you to throw your C-Points at them NOW... but you might want to think about it...
there is also a chance for some sort of *End of Sub* C-Store sale... i would hate to panic buy now only to see a sale then...
also the F2P releasedate needs to be announced to the Press before to get some PR hype going,
this is something they can't just ninja change on us. There should be plenty of time to react.

for the record: this is still on Tribble and "subject to change"...
there... i said it! (happy?)

in reality we all know this won't change because the C-Store is now the only way for Cryptic to make money, and umh... THAT BETTER WORKS OUT!!! ...or we all will be playing TOR very soon... ( because no money = no server, no dev's, no game! )... and we don't want that, right?

Personally i would say make the items cheaper but throw a lot more of them in the Store (but that would also mean more work for the Dev's... and one single Ship Dev can only produce so many Ships, right?).

- Merits / Honor
//edit:
it now seems that Merits are indeed converted to dilithium, at a very low rate.
anyway changing the skills of your BOffs will cost Energy Credits.
sooo... depends what you think you need more
need Energy Credits -> update their skills now for Merits
want that few coins of dilithium -> don't do anything and pay EC later.

- Respec
[redacted]

//update: the first part of the skill revamp is live, it's pretty obvious now that respecing, for merits has no use at this point.
Everyone will get a forced respec and the changes to the skilltree are more severe then i expected (if thats good or bad is for other threads to decide)

...did i miss anything?

Common Gear
If you expect to level new Fed Escort-using characters, you should load up on white Heavy Dual Cannons and Quantum Torpedoes now for all tiers. The common gear vendors on ESD no longer offer any of these, and it's unclear whether this will change or not.
STF Gear

So instead of working through each STF once for the set, after F2P you'll be looking at 30ish (depends on salvage costs) STF missions per part.

//edit:

UPDATE

C-Store Tribbles + Pets

if you didn't notice, there was a big Thread about this over the weekend click

Tribbles and Pets will be changed into *consumable items*,
that means, no more account wide unlock, no more reclaiming of the item if you dismiss it.
The Pets + Tribbles we have bought and earned before F2P will remain intact as Account Unlocks (we get to keep our stuff, thx cryptic!),
so if you have not bought them yet you have 2 options:
you buy now and get your Tribble or Pet for all your chars and re-claimable,
if you buy later you will get ONE item, for that ONE char, you can Trade this item on the exchange or gift it to a friend or USE it yourself, in that case it will be BOUND to your char.

//Merits section updated
//Common Gear quote added
//STF Gear quote added
//Tribble + Pets section added

BOFF training costs EC, not dilithium. Buying common BOFFs from the NPC vendor costs DL.

Emblem gear is becoming BOP again, apparently. It's unclear how this will work if you have emblem gear that you bought on Holodeck that has never been equipped. I'm guessing it gets bound to whoever has it in-hand at the time of the conversion. If it's in your bank, it's bound to you. If it's in your mail . . . unknown; we've never been able to mail BOP items, so I don't think anyone has thought through what happens to an item that is in the mail when it is transformed from BOE to BOP.

*fixed in OP

anyway, Merits are going away, so training your BOffs now is basically FREE.

Good post. You've listed everything I'm working on right now from my own list.

When you put it like this, it's tough to see how all these coming changes are are going to improve the game. If everyone is rushing to get things things done before the changes, that's got to be an indicator of the direction the game is going. (Hurry up and play the game now, before it becomes unbearable.)

Which leads to the follow-up question, why bother?

Merits are already "Phased Out" on Tribble, that means they will go *poof* in the conversion, you will not get any dilithium for them either!
So better make sure that all your BOffs have the Skills you want, one last time, before it costs you Energy Credits.

WRONG.....

You do get dilithium for ALL the merit you have. It will be very small because DL it time based and you got merit for EVERY mission, patrol, FE, daily, ect... you did. My Tribble character had just over 25,000 merit when they "unlocked" DL on tribble. In return I was given around 480 DL for an exchange of about 52:1.

It's still quite a lot of time until f2p will finally hit. And some of the stuff we currently see on tribble may change. Buying some ships for EC now is anyways a good advice, however without final data I won't just now start crafting or spending emblems, or buying cstore ships without real need - you might get disappointed if they change their mind.

Are you even reading what you're typing here? You had 25K merits that turned into 480 dilithium? The cost of ONE white common BOFF at the NPC vendor is 240 DL, if I recall correctly. The reward from ONE daily mission in EE is 480 DL. You could have gotten a whole hell of a lot more on Holodeck for 25K merits than two white common BOFFs. For one thing, you could have trained 83 CDR level skills. For 480 DL, you can get, pretty much . . . nothing. I mean, literally NOTHING. Saying you get dilithium for ALL your merits is pretty silly when a six figure sum turns into a rounding error.

the Dev Blog clearly said "phased out".
that says to me they have gone without replacement unless i understand the wording wrong.

i'm not 100% sure about this...

...but those 480 DL you got on your char could have come from pretty much any single badge / mark or emblem, are you 100% positive that you had NOTHING but the merits on that char?

(needless to say that this still would be a very crappy conversion rate)
