This should probably be in the character builds or shipyard forum...

If you're only Lieutenant Commander 7, then I expect you will be feeling light on abilities for a little while longer. If you're intent on chasing the Cruiser path, consider getting the Excelsior when you hit Lieutenant Commander 11, and receive your promotion to Commander. (and do it before you need to pay for it in December!)

What class do you play as? Tactical, Engineering or Science? That has a good deal of sway in your builds...

Hi,

I will give you a brief run down.

Frist off, on a cruiser you cannot equip Cannons, so maybe that is what you are trying to equip that you cannot.
The only Fed ship that can do so are Escorts (apart from one expection, the dreadnought, which you get at top level)

On a cruiser you should equip Torps and Beams. Try to stick to one type of Beam and one type of torp. So for example Phasers and Photons torps (not mixing in distruptors/plasma etc). So that you can equip damage modifiers in your tactical console slots that match these. For example a tactical console may give +5 to all phaser weapons. There are however tactical consoles that boost all beams, in whch case it is ok to mix your beams up.

Since Beam weapons have large firing arcs when fighting in a cruiser it is traditional to circle you enemy, this allows for both back and front equipped beams to constantly hit your opponent. And this is the basic tactic for cruisers. Set your Weapon Power to high and grind down your enemy.

If you do equip torps then every now and again you could face them towards your enemy and fire them off. More effective of course when there shields are down. Note that because of the combined cool down on torps it is not worth putting more than two on any one side of your ship(fore/aft).

With the engineering console, look at what you have and decide what you like to equip, "turn rate" is a good engineering console.

With Science consoles a Crew recovery rate console is always an easy option. Otherwise look at what skills your science officers use in space and find a corresponding science module that boosts that skill.

You may like to buy an escort ship as well. Then you can switch between them. There is no harm in getting a Science ship as well tbh. They are not expensive. When I levelled up i got all 3 ships types each time i levelled.

Hope that helps.
