So with the advent of the new Dominion Beetle ship, I was wondering how viable are regular cannons? I'm assuming the ship can only equip Cannons and not say Dual or Dual Heavy cannons. Obviously it could equip beams, but my question relates to regular cannons.
I've not used normal cannons that much, are they comparable to say normal Beams? I'm wondering if I equip 3 cannons fore if that would be similar DPS to say 3 beams fore, or higher DPS.
Any thoughts?
I really want to take my Engineer for a joy ride in one of these, but I'm on the fence between this or the Sao Paulo.....
In my experiences arrays, dual beams, DHCs and turrets are the only viable weapons for PvP.
Use anything you want in PvE... the baddies are so easy even the worst setup will do fine.
I have used single cannons to great effect on my cruisers. The Galaxy-X especially benefits from them, BO resets the availability of the phaser lance and visa versa. CRF doesnt so both can be used at the same time.

considering you have a 3m cooldown on the lance, the BO conflict potential is a non issue. if you cannot even manage to shuffle THAT around properly, you have no say in any matter regarding the GX.
That aside:
there is no point in single cannons.
They require scatter volley/crf to do anything worth of note.
If you do not wish to go with Dual beams or dual cannons, go with arrays.
Arrays should be combined with the best debuff pattern you can wring out of your boffs, A bunch of arrays hitting a target that was gifted with pattern beta 3 or delta 3 do a lot of damage and basically cost you nothing. you get unparalleled freedom of movement which will allow you to keep shooting people and still avoid most of the cannon based counterfire. throw in a nice spread 2/3 for good measure.

but don't do single cannons. they are silly.
A) There needs to be clarification throughout this entire thread about whether people are talking about DHCs or DCs.
B) Single cannons are silly? Are you just talking about Escorts? If so, then yes, use all DHCs and turrets and a single torp. But Single cannons allow cruisers to reach the highest possible damage potential with all 8 weapons overlapping in an arc. Having 4 arrays in back and 4 cannons up front allows a 30 degree overlap. This has higher damage potential then 4 DBBs and 4 turrets. Cruisers, not being able to fit DHCs or DCs, get their highest damage potential using a setup with single cannons. Granted it is difficult to keep things in that 30 degree arc of overlap, but I have melted face in some test PvP matches. I use B:FAW, C:SV, and AP:B at the same time. Oh! forgot to mention this is in an advanced heavy cruiser....the only cruiser one should be trying to DPS in anyway .

Really, I "have no say in any matter regarding the GX"??? Theres more than one playstyle for that ship, and I will have my say.
I like to sustain an assault. Instead of "shooting my wad" and being done, I like to press my attack forward. And nothing is wrong with CRF, especially if one has turrets. The Gal-X isn't a turning ship, the cannons; keep a target in arc better than any dual type cannons or DBB can, and they arent subject to linked cooldowns to the lance when pressing an attack. I usually use one DBB and Two single cannons and one torp in the front. Plus, when the Gal-X is an anchor for a group its teaming its fire at the enemy VOF contributes to a kill as well as DPS. If your not lined up in a 45' or 90' (as many times in a Gal-X) you arent firing those weapons.
