# 1 New Skill System?
12-24-2011, 05:56 PM
I'm just wondering, does anyone like the new skill system? It seems to me that they've just (unnecessarily) simplified and generalized everything so that everyone will be the same. Personally, I liked being able to specialize my ship or captain towards certain abilities and technologies.

What advantage does this bring and is it permanent? Does a Test-Server still use the old system?

Yes of course its permanent.

The main advantage is that you don't need to respec every single time you want to use a different ship type or weapon type.

I like it. I change ships quite often and this has saved me a fortune in respec tokens, although specialising in one ship was fun for a while constantly grinding out merits or buying CPoints for respecs got old very fast so I'm glad we have this in game now. It is overly simplified but I still see people in STFs that have terrible specs and BOff layouts so I'd hate to see what they were like with the more complicated older skill tree.

it was simplified and generalized for the F2P players, some of which may have never played a Star Trek game, let alone an MMO

and i like it

The skills may have been generalized, but you are still perfectly capable of specializing if you so choose.
And frankly, I appreciate being able to change the ship that I am in and still be effective in it, as well as goof around with different weapon types and not have to worry about being specced to using a specific energy type.

After playing with it a bit more, I have to agree here. The skill tree opens up quite a bit more at higher levels. That being said, I still miss the more in-depth and complex customization of it :p

it has problems and I don't think they needed to streamline it that much but it's a huge step forward from having to specialize in different energy weapons. Also not having to specialize in different ships is going to save you a lot of money. I don't really like the tree structure either since higher level skills are often worse than lower level ones.

Have you tried the new ground skill system currently on Tribble?
