APAlpha (Tac Only): Boosts your own attack stats, Beta Allows others to boost their attack on your target, Delta is a defensive boost to your own defense stats (So basically, when your opponent is attacking you, damage to you is reduced by xx%, I don't know the amount), Omega is a boost on your attack stats and provides 15 seconds of flight time against a tractor beam or repel.

(Sorry, I don't know any of the MMO lingo that people use because STO is the only MMO I have ever played)

To expand on the above, the attack patterns are as follows;
  • Beta
This is a Damage Resistance debuff. Beta 1 gives -30 Beta2 -40 and Beta 3 -50 DR when fully specced.
Works very nicely against hull, has no effect on shields but NPCs rarely balance then so that's not a problem. If you just want things to die quickly then this is probably the one you want.
  • Delta
As mentioned above this is a defensive buff. Increases your defence rating and hits every target that fires on you with a debuff (IIRC it's -30 to -50 like Beta). Not as useful if you're trying to destroy something with lots of HP though such as the transformers in STFs as it will only debuff a target that fires upon you. Can work but is probably better on a cruiser.
  • Omega
This is a more offensive pattern. Gives a straight damage buff (+25% for Omega 3) as well as a movement, turn rate and defence buff but is on a long timer so can't be used as often.

If you're an Engineer then you'll probably want to go with Beta, although you can maintain high power levels you have no direct damage buffs so a resistance debuff like Beta will give you an indirect damage buff (it makes your target receive more damage per shot).
Delta's nice if you find you're the centre of attention as you'll debuff all of your targets for the rest of the team but it can leave you a little short against stationary objects.
Omega's also nice and quite useful in STFs where you'll encounter lots of tractor beams. It does have a longer cooldown than Beta or Delta though so you won't get as much use out of it than either of those.

I would move towards Omega every time. Omega III will save you from being held in place and boost all your damage. Add in your EPSPT and your NI and you can unleash the fury.

You can also put Polarize Hull in a Science BOFF slot, which immunizes you against Tractors, too.

For PVE, the best attack pattern is beta, especially in STFs. Yes the borg tractor you and yes it sucks. But beta gives the whole team more DPS, and is up twice as often as omega. Of course nothing is stopping you from getting both beta and an omega.

Yes, but that would be getting rid of a very valuable Sci slot for something you do not even need because Omega takes care of it AND gives you other bonuses you need more as an Engy.

Why bother? This is an MVAE with an Engineer Captain. I understand what you are saying about the group bonus and it is true but you can boost your own DPS more significantly with Omega (also Vs. the Shields instead of just against the Hull) and if you ran Disruptors you would be getting the other bonus as well but that is not even needed. If you split into Beta Vector Alpha will put APB onto your targets FOR YOU and Gamma Vector will mess up their shields and if it takes Aggro will slap them with the APD debuff as well. In an MVAE there is really no need for Beta Vs. Omega III.

AP Omega + Evasive Manuevers (or an engine battery) = GTFO combo.

Very useful when you're getting slammed by Borg, assuming you don't want to just Abandon Ship, do a core breach on them and respawn.

You can really see that the major benefit is going to rank 6 with most of these skills.
