# 1 Self Fulfilling Prophecy
01-11-2012, 03:24 AM
I'm on day 368 of my STO play and I have loved every single minute. I got involved with a fleet which I now help to run, my two children are avid fans, we love everything about this game and Star Trek which I have been watching for over forty years.

Then I started to read the forums, a lot, about three weeks ago. I realised that there are a lot of unhappy people out there. I commented on many posts regarding lack of FE, bugs, PvP content, foundry issues etc, tried to answer with a positive note and suggesting that 2012 will be the year this mess is cleared up and STO will go from strength to strength. I discovered STOKED about 2 months ago and have watched all the episodes up until 109. I thoroughly loved Chris's enthusiasm and found much of my own optimism in what he said.

However a strange thing has happened to me, as I continued to read more and more posts of people complaining about this that and the other I was starting to feel my naive love of this amazing game was waning. Now with STOKED finished for the foreseeable future I wake up this morning and wonder if I should even bother logging in any more, and to think I was on the verge of buying three lifetime subscriptions.

Now I have been thinking about this and how I feel this morning and I realised that had I never read these forums I would still be thoroughly enjoying the game and wouldn't feel depressed about it at all. I would be eagerly awaiting new content of course but it would have been a surprise to me when it arrived or when a fleet member told me about it. I also realised that out of all the negative posts that are written the same few names keep appearing, interestingly I have seen one of those names on the zone at ESD and again everything he said was negative.

I'm not easily led but the steady drip feed of misery and depression has got me down. So I have made the following decision, I will never read another thread to do with the cancellation of STO, it's lack of content or any other negative feedback. I will continue to play the game and participate in technical threads on the forum. I look forward to welcoming the thousands of new players next week and helping them out as much as I can in zone and recruiting many of them to the fleet. No doubt I will be accompanying many on replay missions which will be new to them but by experiencing them again with new players I feel a certain amount of excitement that I wouldn't if I were going solo.

So what's my point? Well I think you guys with all the complaints, many which are very valid, are doing a disservice to the game by continually going on and on about it in a glass half empty way. I wonder how many players have hung up their phasers for the last time after being demoralised by the comments here? I wonder how many potential F2Pers, subs and LTMs have decided not to bother after checking the forums first. I think some must have and perhaps many, unfortunately they made the wrong decision IMO and if they give the game a chance they will love it as I do. If you guys aren't careful this game will end for sure and a major contributor to it's eventual demise will be this forum's negative approach. If I were an employee at Cryptic and was foolish enough to read these forums I would surely be thinking that all my hard work was not appreciated, and aside from money people work for satisfaction and appreciation of a job well done.

So please can you all lay off the doom and gloom band wagon for a while, give the F2Pers a chance to discover what we all know and love, don't scare them away with portents of doom, there are enough of those for 2012 already! Let's make sure that the continued complaints and predictions about saving a sinking ship don't become a self fulfilling prophecy.

Have fun you guys

I've received a couple of very nice private messages supporting the above which I find encouraging. Let's hope the F2P passes off without a hitch and then look forward to the great new content that the DEVs are working on.

dont get me wrong. i love the game, i love the space combat. its the ignorance on other parts of the games that has led me to loose faith. the complete lack of anything pvp. the lack of communication to the pvp'rs on things that will greatly lead to things effecting it. its almost as if to cyptic pvp doesnt exsist... which is sad.

Well, I feel the same way as well. And was in the process of writing similar. But you have laid out some the outlining premises which have been witnessed within these virtaul halls, in the last several months.

I am no stranger to the displeasuring feelings displayed throughout the many threads, and the only way for that to change.

Is the mirky attitude that exist within said company, and said with good reason. If you have a productive and decent atmosphere within said business place, that can echo into a delivery that can make the comsumer want to invest in a possible long term on said product, because they are enjoying the many 'benefits' of whatver the product is.

Can go a long way...

Go the opposite, well...you have seen for yourself what's that like.

I sincerely hope, I do...that the lessons that have pasted, are not forgotten, and improving on what has sullied, can be bettered in all areas, in general.

If done, respect must be earned (back) and must be mainatined...if said company and consumers wish to continue to enjoy said product.

I'm hopeful about post-F2P, but extremely jaded about the Cryptic execs' behavior toward this game.

No new missions, story and patrol missions not giving dilithium DESPITE being *the* reason to play, lack of new story missions or PvP at the frequency promised initially, monetize everything, torturous revamp of how they "reward" people who run STF's, old bugs still haunting the game with no concrete plans on fixing them or insistance that things are now "working as intended."

Also, the overly defensive position most of the crew has taken lately towards negative, but constructive, feedback is also alarming. I'm glad Brandon and the J-Man are there. Before they started at Cryptic (with a few exceptions... Heretic for starters) I feel like we've been ignored then beat up with some very condescending attitudes.

I appreciate the point of view.

I personally feel an increase of transparent communication from the Developers would go a long way to keeping the player base happy.

I love the OP...when faced with a disturbing truth...his/her response is to stick his/her head in the sand.

While some of what the OP stated is true about a self fulfilling prophecy herein...there are reasons things have gotten to this point. I sumbit:

1- The premise that the doom & gloom is limited to a few people is a dangerous viewpoint. I personnaly played early release with 5 or 6 co-workers; I'm the only one who still logs into STO. There are gaggles of former players out there who supported this game even through the content drought. Our reward has been Red Alerts and a plethora of new costumes and ships. Bully bully!!! Where are the new missions and FE's? Where is the Klingon content?

2- Many of the same people above have subsidized Cryptic/PW while they used our money to "develop" their new F2P model

1 + 2 = Cya!!!!

people claimed the same thing in 2011. its not going to happen this year either unless major changes are made, and every indication has been that such changes are not going to happen

and STO will go from strength to strength
considering STO is not, nor has it ever been in a position of anything even remotely resembling strength, this isn't going to happen either. its been on the bubble since beta.

and he explicitly stated he will not say anything on there that is in any way 'negative' you know what that means? it means all hes doing is giving a very distorted view of what is actually going on, not the reality. theres a word for that: propaganda. and what did cryptic do? gave him special rewards for doing it. says alot about both of them.

I doubt that. sounds more like you have convinced yourself of that yourself.

then you have not been paying attention. there are far more than 'the same few' people with negative things to say about this game. when people that were previously fanatically pro cryptic are saying theres problems that should be a major red flag.

stop being condescending

in other words you're going to stick your head in the sand and not acknowledge the reality of the situation. that doesn't help you or the situation in general. ignoring problems don't make them go away

again, condescending. and first you say people are just complaining and then you say many of the complaints are valid, yet you will ignore them anyway? which is it? showing you are not satisfied with the current situation of the game is not a disservice. you know why people keep going on about it? cause nothing is done about it or we get lied to about it repeatedly.

I doubt if any have. if you leave a game cause of people complaining about valid issues theres something wrong

excuse me? blaming the games eventual demise on the people on the forum is profoundly ignorant. games do not fail from that and none ever has. if the game fails it is not the players fault it is the companies fault for not running it properly.

in short, stop blaming the players for something that cryptic has brought on themselves with their own actions. if you really can't see why people are angry after the way they have been treated you have clearly not been paying attention
