# 1 Cannon/turret excelsiors
01-15-2012, 10:20 PM
I've seen a lot of people lately running space STFs with Excelsiors loaded down with phaser cannons and turrets. It does look cool, but I was wondering, is that really any better than running it with beam phasers?

Well, the Excelsior benefits from being pretty agile for a Cruiser, which means it can keep that fore 180-degrees on a target better than a Gal-X. Not to mention, it has the Tac slots to capitalize with a CRF 2 or CSV 2...

Sounds to me like one of those things that boils down to personal preference.

I run turrets on my Excelsior in the rear slots mainly because I didn't have decent weapons to put in the stock slots until I looted two level appropriate blue turrets in a row. I had a BO with CRF2 in place so it fit, and I have to say I am liking the results as I have two damage types for turrets, plus my phasers.

I'm one of those folks running around with a single cannons/turrets Excelsior, and I love it. Here's the benefits as I see them. Being able to run 2 copies of spray & pray (CRF or CSV, dealer's preference), and 2 copies of DEM (which really boost cannon damage). This allows for, imo, appreciable sustained dps for a cruiser; you've still got good survival abilities (esp as an ENG captain) and thus may be an excellent (perhaps the premier) tank if you've spec'd into threat control.

Side note. More cruiser captains spec into threat control please! Tyvm!

Its a good layout, nothing wrong with it. Its also affordable (forward single cannons are CHEAP on the exchange).

As mentioned, it works best with the Excelsior as opposed to other cruisers.

It is a Good Build, BUT there are some variables to work out my friend.

Oh a Whole damage and DPS wise, I think the Average is the same. On one Excelsior I run three cannons and four turrets, With one torpedo launcher up front.

One of the flavors you need to consider is Damage or PROC Damage. On my Excelsior, before the Removal of the 250 emblems.

I got Some Anti Borg Anti proton Cannons and turrets. The Power I use is Cannon Rapid fire two, knowing that when I land a critical hit, which I see on average is roughly 3-5 times per attack cycle. Give or take.

As for the flavor of what you want, you need to look at the damage PROCS, Like Tetryon strips shields, Plasma weapons put the enemy on plasma fire and by passes the shields for damage.

Also Turrets and CAnnons Do the same damage to Shields as they do to hull. Beams do like 10-15% less on the hull and +15% more on the shields... The Build is sound, you just need to experiment with what flavor of weapon you want to run.

Another HIGHly effective build is a BEAM BOAT, I run with 6 Anti proton beam arrays on one ship, and two torpedo launches. On broad sides I use Beam Fire at will 3, or beam over load 3. In PVP Fire at will has for me at times Slaughtered enemy ships like frigates in groups of 3 that before the 10 second timer is up I have often destroyed 2 or all three enemy ships.

The Six beams also add up to some fairly serious damage.

This sounds fun. I am so bored with my cruisar, maybe this will help. Other wise my engineer is back to an escort. Sorry to all you guys looking for cover but my Tac has ruined my tanking days. So i can survive an entire elite mission (sometimes), big deal. I really just want to blow stuff up!

And it allows you to take out those probes/bops/etc in STFs almost as well as an escort would do it (ok, a bad escort).

Cannon Excelsiors can deal an impressive amount of damage, more than a beam boat. I had 1 of my tac captains in one for a long time before I went back to escorts. The only drawback is, that cannons lose a lot of damage over range, so you have to go close and pay attention when big things blow up. Remember it's still a cruiser, so plan your evasive strategy.
