I posted this idea in another part of the forum but I like this idea so much I thought i'd get your feedback on it.
Ship Refit Tokens
There should be a C store option for a captain(rank 4) and Admiral (rank 5) to refit their ship from 1 tier lower.
E.g. This was a comment from my friend yesterday. He plays a science office. And He is following the science ship route.
He LOVES the the horizon 'ball' ship. God knows why its hideous. But he does! So When he gets promoted to Captain he, under the current system, will have to leave his beloved 'Ball' ship and move on up. Which he does not want to do. (He hates all the saucers.) So it would be great for him and others who love a particular class of ship to be able to bring it upto the current tiers abilities.
So a refitted Horizon class would have the stats (close too) of an Intrepid class. Similar weapon mounts, bridge officer stations consoles, re-enforced hull etc. To show people that the ship has been upgraded its name should change to 'Horizon refit-A'. Or something.
Then when he gets promoted to Admiral he could do it again and his horizon would would be refitted to be similar to Destiny class. 'horizon Refit-B' etc
Clearly this would have a price ... i'm guessing the equivalent of buying the same tier of science ship from the store. 1500c - 2000c.
Which ships to do this with would be up to the devs. But I would say it should be available from Captain rank up and it should bring a tier 3 to the level of 4 ... 4 - 5 ... etc.
The great thing is that this would require NO graphical work (as the whole point of this is we love the LOOK of our ship and want to keep it later in the game.) . It would jsut need some database work. There would be no balancing issues as the tiers have already been balanced. The only work would be with the name change. i'm no Dev but that to me does not sound like a mammoth task.
Soooo what do you all think? Thumbs up? or Thumbs down?
crafting requires a huge amount of work. Missions ..dialogue ...scematics ... graphics ... all sorts.
What I'm suggesting:
A) Has very little impact on Dev time.
B) Would generate more income for Cryptic.
C) Add something very valuable to a decent proportion of the community.
A crafting version would introduce another element of grind. And take up a huge amount of time on the Dev's part.
This is one of the main problems this game had from inception.
The tiered system and the inbuilt obsolescence this darned "WOW in space" game design(Tank/Healer/Damage) introduces for about 80% of the ships.
They somewhat made an effort to remedy that for the next to last tier.
But only because people made just too much of a fuss that all the iconic TV series ships could only be flown for a day or so during level-up.
Now I personally hate this new thing of paying Cryptic points for these ships. But I can understand it´s a necessary evil of F2P. As long as they aren´t too overpowered, compared to the "standard" ships.
As for your saucer hating friend. What about Escort ships?
The Vulcan cruiser is a nice alternative Sci ship too IMHO. Or just go Klingon.
Hey, at least they ignore everyone so you know it's not just you.
Maybe you didn´t notice but Cryptic probably had other problems this last year than reading fora or even adding content.
Basically they should be dead right now if not for the Chinese "yellow knight" warping to the orion slave trader auction.
And outright buying this "entertainment" slave from the greedy frenchies.
Actually if I understand the current climate at Cryptic correctly, right now IS the best time to give input!
Even if the threads explaining the problems have been around for years. Go figure.
It's probably too difficult to implement and balance to ever be done.
Uh, not really.
Though tier 3 ships should be the last to be "refit-able", due to obvious ship-volume - power problems. They could be easily given the Enterprise-B treatment but turned into one trick ponies instead.
So giving them a hard coded Tier3 BoFF power could be an option. Maybe even a different one for each costume!
And add various other appropriate balancing overhauls to elevate them to the Tier 5 league.
Not THAT big of a problem IMHO. I bet Logan would love to E-B´ify those cute Tier 3 designs.
