Rivera was bluntly honest about the grab bags that were introduced in the game last December. Simply put: Yes, they were a hit, and no, they will not be going away. Rivera explained that while the revenue-generating gimmicks were very successful, they were also used as a means to get ships into the game, ships that most likely never would have seen the light of the monitor before now. CBS did not approve the generalized use of the Jem'Hadar attack ships in game because company representatives felt that portraying a majority of Starfleet officers flying enemy vessels was counter to the image they want to convey. CBS was amenable, however, to allowing the ships to appear in "ultra rare" circumstances, making the Dominion ships the perfect choice for the STO's first game-of-chance.
He stated there was a possibility other atypical ships or items may make appearances via a grab-bag, especially items that CBS may be more open to allowing on an ultra-rare basis. The mention of a Tier-5 Constitution class came up as an example, but he confirmed that no formal discussions have occurred with CBS about any ship, let alone a "Tier-5 Connie."
However, Rivera was able to confirm that there are no plans to release the new Odyssey class ships in this fashion and reiterated that they will be available via in-game currency or for purchase in the C-Store.
Rivera was also adamant that the revenue generated by the grab bags will allow the team to put more time and money into hiring and development of more featured content that is necessary to keep players interested in the game.
Well i'm not sure about others but nearly everyone i've spoken to on the matter wont be buying 'grab bags' from the C-store ever again. Best of luck to you on your next grab bag shenanigans
I would like to know other people's opinions on the Grab bags.
>Anything gameplay related(IE: ships, weapons, etc) should all be obtainable in game(without very obnoxious grinds)
>Any item you are purchasing with real life money should be 100%, not a random chance(this is just my personal opinion of course)
Many people won't be able to resist the urge at the lottery, and while I'm not one of those people I think it's DISGUSTING that Cryptic would abuse people in such a manner. If the grab bags were purchased with a form of ingame currency or some system like that; I would have a LOT less problem with it - but with the last iteration it's just, frankly disgusting.
Obviously I can choose or NOT to purchase the item(and I most definetly didn't), but I just think it's a scummy thing to do in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I want the game to make money; just like I want to keep my job but I'm not going to go against my moral fiber to do so.
I have no problem with grab bags. They are unbound, so can buy them off the exchange for EC, so no issue there. And if I have a little extra cash to spend week to week, might drop some on the game instead of going to the movies or something. No big deal in any case.
...Here's to hoping for a D'Deridex grab bag ship :-D... Scimitar ship would be cool, but possibly OP if done right.. besides, I kind of prefer the D'Deridex anyway... maybe a superior Cloaking Device than currently exists in game (higher stealth capabilities, plus battle cloak as well) due to the superior Romulan cloaking tech... probably a cruiser (though I havent flown one of those before, but I would learn just to use the D'Deridex)... an entire Romulan faction would be preferred, but I would go for a D'Deridex ship instead until such a time comes when Klingon Faction is great, and they are ready to create faction #3
