Is it possible to play this game (and enjoy it to some degree!) without playing missions beyond, say, 1 or 2?

I tend to prefer sandbox games myself, where the enjoyment is derived from player-driven content and pvp. I'm fairly early into this game, but so far it seems to be a pretty linear series of missions and not much else*. Hopefully I'm wrong.. or maybe it's something that will change in time.

* Self-flagged as potentially ignorant statement.

Edit: I've read a little about Foundry (player made?) missions and fleets. What can player fleets do specifically (other than missions)?

STO is not a sandbox game so if that's what you're looking for then STO is not going to be for you.

The game does have PvP but Klingons come out of the game around level 25 so there's no real foes to PvP before that level - and the PvP maps/scenarios are limited in the game so far.

In short, yes. It is possible to enjoy the game doing exactly what you're saying, and to play it, and level up.

However, it comes at a cost, since the game wasn't outwardly designed to be played like that. You'll level more slowly, playing UGC Foundry Missions, attempting (mostly in vain) to get PvP matches, and playing the Duty Officer System very heavily. There are some simple repeatable missions you could do to speed this process up, but, by in large, you'd be denying yourself a very large part of the game.

But, if playing like that makes you happy, you're willing to take that hit to EXP and stuff, and you honestly enjoy it, more power to you, friend. =D

STO is a great sandbox game. I rarely do missions these days unless i'm specifically looking to do one i remember really enjoying.

I log in, i chat in zone or private channels. i sit on my bridge and manage my doffs, or fly around from ESD to DS9 or some other location managing doff missions along the way.

Often, i'll head over to Kerrat to play phaser tag with our klink brethren or sign up for an arena pvp.

Regardless of what anyone says, i've never had a problem getting a pvp match. if the ques are slow, you can always just ask if anyone wants to go a few rounds in zone chat.

Heck, if you get really board you can head to DS9 and waste some time playing DABO and chatting.

The world is open and it's up to you to figure out what you'd like to be doing at any given time.

Enjoy the game!!
