The multivector has a LTC science slot, which opens up a lot of interesting things - gravity well and TSS3 in particular come to mind.

MVAM itself is fun. Beta section is has maneuverability like a bird of prey with a smaller hull/shield penalty and a full escort equipment loadout (no cloak, though). You can use it on the stock advanced escort, too, if you prefer that bridge setup. The cooldown is fairly long, but there's only a partial cooldown on the other two modes, so you can use alpha or gamma in between, though I prefer beta enough that I usually wait for it to be ready.

The Defiant-R has a cloak. Which is fun, and kind of a big deal if you're a Fed player since it's our only escort with a cloak. It's a bit more maneuverable than the MVAE is when it's combined, but separated the MVAE will run circles around it.

Reasons to fly the various max-level escorts:

Fleet Escort:
1) Best layout of engineering BO abilities (2x EPtS + RSP)
2) Best layout of tactical BO abilities (2x Tier 3 abilities, 2x Tier 1 abilities)
3) Best layout of consoles (3x eng, 4x tactical)
4) Most crew

MVAE:
1) Can get the Gravity Well BO ability.

Defiant Retrofit:
1) Has a cloak (for PvP)
2) Best layout of consoles (3x eng, 4x tactical)

Advaced Escort:
...can't think of any reason to ever fly this one...

Remember, the fleet escort can also get Mask Energy Signature II

You can also Put the mvam console into the regular advanced escourt (I like the boff layout better). The only problem I have with the VA ships is the extra Ensign Tactical slot. I never wanted or used the third tac ensign buff. I Liked the Mvam features and the option of gravity well in an escort is nice and only availible to the multivector advanced escort.

Also with the multi vector, your ship pets use phasers and photons so you will get more out of them if you use the same weapons type on your ship.

Sure, except for the T3 science slot, the BO layout of the MVAE is just terrible. However, the T3 science slot is the whole point - the actual MVAE ability is more of a gimmick than anything. While the layout of the Advanced Escort is better than the MVAE, the Fleet escort BO layout is better still, and does not have any of the disadvantages of the Advanced Escort/MVAE.

I'm currently Using the fleet escort myself. I don't disagree. I just prefer the t3 tac over the t3 sci boff station for the additional damage.

While I can see why you say the mvam is a gimmick the main thing going for the mvam is attack pattern beta. That is highly maneuverable. Separating usually breaks most tractor beams and can confuse enemy targets for who they are targeting as well.

All of them have their uses, all are worth having to some degree.

With the MACO shield being currently significantly overpowered, I actually switched to the Advanced from the Fleet because I don't need as many Engineering skills to keep me alive. The MVAM would also be a good idea for this.

The Defiant is a PVP ship IMO with the cloak making it a not-so-easy target. The extra tactical skill doesn't really help, its actually more difficult to deal with.

My opinion: If you are a PVE player, get the MVAM, if you are a PVP player take the Defiant.

Yes, I'd prefer to see and Ensign Engineer in that stead.
