Thanks for the links.

That's pretty awesome. I was a little worried about running around in a tier 4 ship when I hit 50.

Well you get a good choice of T5 ships for free when you hit Read Admiral. The Sovereing, Starcruisers, Hermies escorts, etc. What you don't get are the T5.5 VA ships for free. Those you must buy from the C-Store.

I currenlyt have 6 VAs and only 2 of them are using the T5.5 ships: one is using a Galaxy Refit and the other is using a Defiant Refit. The other 4 are using the stock T5 ships and doing just fine: one is in a Sovereign, one in a Hermes, one in an Oracle, and 1 in a Luna. A couple of them will probably be upgrading to the Odyssey, though.

Well if your a 500 or 600 day vet(not sure which) you get free choice of T5 ship. Other wise you need to save up dilithium or buy in C-store.

Yeah, the 600 day Vet Reward will get you a free T5.5 ship. The stock T5s are free, though. If you want another T5 ship that isn't stock you need to buy it from the C-Store.

Ah yeah, my bad, the captain ship would be the tier 4 ship.

So by "Tier 5.5" i take it that the non-c-store tier 5 ships are still viable at 50, just not quite as much oomph as the 5.5s

Yeah. As I said above, 4 of my VAs use the stock T5 ships without any problems. The Retrofit special abilities are interesting but not really necessary to have fun: Galaxy gets Saucer Separation, Intrepid gets Ablative Armor, and Defiant gets the Cloak.

As far as the C-Store, the Excelsior is a nice Tac Captain T5 Cruiser, though. It has a good turn rate, a LC Tac BOFF slot, and such. A lot of Tac Captains choose the Excelsior. But I'm not into high level PvP and so get along well with my Sovereign and Galaxy R.

Nice to know. I'll probably cave and buy a ship anyway, but its nice to know I won't be gimped if I dont.

This kinda turned into a random Q&A thread didn't it?

You could always consider having both, albeit it's more expensive since F2P (used to be able buy ships for EC). One of the best things about the new skill tree is that you are no longer locked into a particular ship. Most of my characters have the ability to fly different ships. My engineer has an excelisor-R, but is currently flying a Defiant-R for STFs. My sci flies an Intrepid-R, but is currently flying a regular stock advanced escort. My KDF sci can fly either BOP or Kar'Fi carrier depending on what is needed or what I'm in the mood to play. I just love having this kind of flexibility. The only difficult thing to deal with is the BO arrangement which can be a little tricky at times. Definitely used up all my BO slots.

And if you get to be a 600-day vet, you will get a free Retrofit ship for all your characters. And it's not too hard to gear the ships up. Running some STF's should net you some rare borg salvage which you can trade in for purple mark XI ship gear.

TACs are great in STFs. I was flying cruiser and even bought a Dreadnought it can outlast many things but its VERY slow and you can't outtank a single sphere even in a cruiser without any help. I've noticed that DPS is more important in STFs than anything. If you don't have enough DPS you either fail the Optional or gonna be a big soar on teams face.

Cruisers are good for PvE, meaning questing and even then they are very slow pokes. You can shield tank well these days in escort type ships as well. Having 2 Tactical Teams does half of the wonder already. In the end though there should be a good balance of tanking and DPS in STF especially. Burst damage is as important as big shields. But DPS ends up being more important in the end in STF especially.
