I do pretty well in a science vessel. my set up is here

it does well in stf's im able to hold off just about anything (probes, spheres, and on occasion cubes)
unless you have massive dps and are able to kill 2-3 probes fast or have GW/TB as a science cpt your not gonna be any use in stf's. i dont pvp space much so i cant really comment on that but on ground i can stay alive long enough more so than others and be able to keep my team going for a long while. i almost always go 20-1 atleast in ground pvp. (thats with the omega XI set)

if science is played right, it can be pretty good even in a science ship. I use to run eng as my main but I made a medic for stf's back before f2p and now its all i use.

I fly a VA Science captain, in a Science starship. I'm not specced to Medical; I'm a controller/buff/debuff Science character to the core.

And to be honest, I rock.

AND I have a great time playing.

STO is not strictly a gear = I win game. It's not even strictly a skill points = I win game.

How you play can be as important as what you're playing. Player judgement and decision-making matter in STO.

If you're having trouble playing Science/Science, take a harder look at what your class and your ship can actually do.

Most importantly, take a harder look at what you actually /want/ to do in-game. It may be that the science class options simply aren't giving you what you genuinely enjoy playing, when it comes right down to it.

I'll wait on Risa for 30 minutes past the start up time. After which, if you don't show, it will be counted as a forfeit.

Stipulation: No P2W consoles. Everything else is fair.

I've played since launch, am a lifer, and my main is a sci/sci who flies a Luna, and left at the onset of Season 5 due to design decisions I am not in agreement with (and still dont)

I just recently decided to see what all the hubub is about my beloved class and ship, and lo and behold, its the same argument of many who simply dont grasp the peculiarities of being a Science captain in a Science Ship.

I also have seen the many, many, MANY other pitfalls Cryptic has fallen into in terms of overarching game design and balancing, but thats well beyond the scope of the post I'm about to make.

Other than admitted bugs and stuff that needs fixing, science ships are fine. Science captains are fine. Both are fine together. The rest of the game and the mentality it breeds isnt..

PvE is indeed a DPS race. PvP is a cluster**** of horrific details I wont even bother getting into, as it is far beyond the scope of this post.. People expect the science ship to be good at what the Cruiser or Escort does and fail.

So whats the point of a science ship? Battlefield control. Force multiplication.

Most people dont realize that the entire point of this game, as DPS-y as it is, is to synergize different classes and ships for that singular goal. Escorts provide the hammer, cruisers the anvil, and the science as the fire that bakes the metal red hot, ready to be struck.

Example scenario 01:
Infected space STF, two escorts, two cruisers, 1 sci. Need to hold down the mob that just came through the gate? No problem, says the sci, as he drops Gravity Well and they all clump together, ready for the escorts to throw Spread Volley, the cruisers to pop Fire At Will, and the science ship popping his own flair with Torp Spread.

Example scenario 02:
Lone science ship doing a solo mission, finds 3 Probes. Drops Charged Particle Burst between them to weaken shields, Fire At Will to drop a facing, and follow-up with Torp Spread. Oh that Sphere didnt like you beating up on his Probe-y friends and the heat's too much? Jam Sensors, get out of range, prep for the re-entry.

Example scenario 03:
PvP. Your team is handling the other fine, except for a tough-as-obsidian eng/cruiser in the center keeping their team 1 cap point above yours. Drop Tykens III, Siphon, Target Shields Subsystem right on him, watch him burn all his hull heals under your team escorts who dont have to bother maneuvering to keep an open facing to them. His healers coming back to save him? Tractor Repulse them away out of range. Still not enough? Scramble their sensors, watch them burn their science teams, ready for you to pop a Subnuc and totally ruin their day as Tykens III, Siphon are off cooldown.

Example scenario 04:
1 on 1 engagement vs an Escort. He's just come out of cloak. Pop Feedback Pulse and watch him burn himself dry. Worried about shields? Transfer Shield Strength to yourself. Still worried? Tractor Beam his *** and get to his side. He broke out? Jam Sensors, watch him burn that Science Team. Subnuc his *** and go to town.

I've just recently gotten into STO's new format for STFs (odd, but works), and I've never had a single complaint from pugs about me properly flying my Luna. Those who left prematurely due to having a science ship as a pug-mate missed out on an easy EDC.

Im a VA science officer with a science ship returning to the game and have not found that Im very weak at all. I've been catching up on content. and redoing my toon to reflect the changes since playing last. The role I like to play is Pure healer on the ground and can usually keep the battle flowing without any downtime.

Bought a new ship as I see it was the only one Available (vulcan science) I have an intrepid retrofit. I do not feel underpowered.

However my build still needs tweaking as for the raid content Im not sure what to build for but that is another story.

Just a last note - on Ground scenarios my ground weapon was a anti-proton pistol and a batlef(sp) for the elite tactical drones. - worked a treat. but that was before.
